My Day is Propelled by Reminders

Twenty-five years ago, I could keep everything in my head. I was finishing college and working nights as a room-service server in Tempe, Arizona. I knew my class schedule, assignment due dates, and the minimum GPA needed to pass, as well as my shifts at work and a running tally of my weekly tips. Admittedly, I no longer possess the ability to rely solely on my memory for that level of complicated time-management. 

These days, the HeavyConnect team and the Zelaya team count on me to keep my responsibilities & priorities aligned. It is a lot to carry around in my 47-year-old noggin. So, every day I use various forms of reminders. Reminders put my day on a straight track and help me make progress toward my goals.

 For example, in the morning, I use an alarm on my phone to wake up, the auto-start timer on the coffee machine for inspiration juice, and the smart light switch to turn off the lights after we all leave the house.

At work, I use two calendar reminders for every meeting (a 30-min. & a 5-min.) and the Gmail snooze button to remind me to close the loop with team members. On the road, I use the map’s voice notification so I don’t miss my turn and get lost on my way to a customer visit. I still manage to get lost every time I get behind the wheel.

In the evening, I use a printed calendar on the fridge to remind the kids whose turn it is to do the dishes. They rotate so that one washes, another dries, and the third puts the clean dishes away. This cuts down on arguing. There is also a text reminder from the school that band practice is tomorrow so I need to set out their instruments by the door. Finally, my fitness app reminds me to go for an evening walk if I want to hit my daily steps goal. Hmmm.
