My Entrepreneurial Journey - Robin King

Our Australian member Robin King , Co-Founding Partner of Brown Ward King has shared with us his journey in entrepreneurship and answered our questions

Robin has been a corporate and commercial lawyer with over 20 years of experience in both the United Kingdom and Australia.

Before moving to Australia from England, he worked in private practice for an award-winning regional UK law firm and as in-house counsel for an international FTSE listed travel company. He has also worked on secondment as in-house counsel for corporate clients in Australia.

Brown Ward King, in which Robin is a co-founding partner, is a Sydney-based, boutique commercial law firm founded by three like-minded Principals with backgrounds in mid-to-large tier law firms in Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.

What was the driving force behind opening your own firm/ becoming a leading partner?

Our driving force for starting our new firm was to offer the same (and better) service to clients as we had done at larger firms, but on a more flexible and personal basis. Each Principal at Brown Ward King prides themselves on their personal relationships with clients, which are allowed to thrive better in a smaller, more collegiate, yet equally professional and competitive environment.

How did you decide to take that leap of faith to branch out on your own?

There were many factors driving each of our Principals to take the leap of faith to branch out on our own. Perhaps, the key is autonomy and being able to offer our clients a service in the way we each would like to, and always with the ability to be flexible. For some of us, being in larger firms during the COVID pandemic made us realise how the professions at large could be quite inflexible and reactive, rather than positive and proactive, in response.

Did you ever have doubts about the decision you had made and what made you push towards becoming the success you are today?

No doubts and no regrets. I wish we had made the move sooner. Of course, there are teething problems, growing pains … but that is part of life. It is a case of the old cliché, … no pain, no gain.

What kind of culture exists in your organization and was that a conscious choice?

We have a culture which (I believe) is second to none. That is borne out of the respect which we all have for one another across our small firm. All of the members of our firm have been individually selected (not recruited) by us, or referred to us by trusted fellow professionals, for which we are incredibly thankful. Finding good professional people is becoming a common problem across the globe, not just in Australia.

We thank Robin King for taking the time to share his incredible success story and educating many aspiring entrepreneurs through his life experiences.
