My Journey from Immigration Challenges to Entrepreneurship

My Journey from Immigration Challenges to Entrepreneurship

When I arrived in the United States at age 12, I was filled with hope and excitement. But the journey that followed was anything but simple. It took over 20 years—filled with uncertainty, setbacks, and perseverance—before I could finally call myself a U.S. citizen in 2022. From 1995 until I received my green card in 2015, I faced many limitations: years when I couldn’t work, attend college, or fully participate in the opportunities that this country offers. Even when I began to explore entrepreneurship, the lack of proper documentation often felt like an invisible ceiling, keeping me from reaching my full potential.

This experience not only shaped who I am but also inspired me to take action. In 2016, I founded ParallelScore, a company with a mission to create 1,000 jobs within a decade with a particular focus on Africa. My goal is simple yet ambitious: to help Africans and disadvantaged but motivated people achieve success without needing to cross borders, and to enable them to participate in the global economy right from their home countries. ParallelScore leverages data, technology, and product innovation to build a bridge between local talent and global opportunities, providing a pathway for others to thrive without enduring the struggles I faced.

Comparing Illegal Immigration and Tax Loopholes

As I reflect on my own journey, I can’t help but notice the stark contrast between how we address illegal immigration and how we handle tax loopholes for the ultra-wealthy. These two scenarios are often compared, yet they reveal much about our societal values.

This table highlights a fundamental disparity: while some people are punished for simply trying to build a better life, others are rewarded for exploiting the system. For years, I lived in fear of deportation, my life in a state of uncertainty because of my immigration status. Yet, at the same time, those with wealth and resources can navigate legal loopholes to preserve and grow their fortunes with minimal risk.

The Power of Perspective

My journey through the U.S. immigration system was long and filled with obstacles, but it gave me a unique perspective—one that fuels my commitment to create opportunities for others who face their own barriers. Through ParallelScore, we’re not just building a business; we’re building a community and environment where talent can thrive and connect with global markets. Our work is grounded in the belief that success shouldn’t be limited by borders or circumstances, but should be accessible to all who are willing to work for it.

Food for Thought

As we think about these two paths—one filled with barriers, the other paved with loopholes—it’s worth asking: What kind of society do we want to be? How might we reshape our systems to ensure that opportunity is truly within reach for everyone, no matter where they start their journey?
