My Journey: Riby, BLA... What Next?

My Journey - A Quick Summary:

  • It’s been 20 years of learning, growth, failures, and successes… and I am filled with gratitude for how far we/I have come, and joy for all the exciting times ahead, not by my ‘power’ but by God’s special grace.
  • I am operating within my “Conscious Conviction” (see reference linked below for context), and my mission remains to “Create Prosperous Communities” in key cities around the world.
  • It’s still Day 1, and I am still far behind, but my journey continues. I am super grateful to so many people who have and continue to believe in me and my mission (like my favorite Uncle Adeyinka Ogunnubi) and I know that one day, I will write a long epistle to express my huge thank yous (line by line).
  • About 10 years ago, I met my wife (Ola, short for Olaedo), and we have two amazing kids (Jadesola and Kamsy). I am grateful to them for always supporting me, loving me, and being an amazing source of “ginger and guardrails” in my decision-making for important life matters! 😊
  • I took a few hours to create this quick snapshot of my journey so far and the experiments we have run at our indie Venture Studio (BusinessLab Africa/BLA), with Riby being the most popular to date.

RIBY - My 5+ Years Intro into the Venture World:

  • An experience of a lifetime, and most people that know me, know this story well. For many years, my second name was Riby or Mr. Riby, and so many people only know me till this present time by my work at Riby. It has been an amazing ride and a huge learning experience.
  • Riby had two main business units which we tagged Retail and Enterprise. On the retail side (which was our main focus at the time), we had prospected close to a million users by cooperative-member count across thousands of cooperatives and onboarded 250,000+ with tens of thousands of paying users. The big challenge here was that majority of this demography operate offline — where most of Nigeria still operate today, hence the success of the Agency Banking industry.
  • Collectively, our retail and enterprise business had generated over $3m in revenue and invested over $1.2m in capital. So you see, it was very painful for us when we had to shut down our core RIBY Business in Nigeria, primarily due to the unsustainable unit economics of operating a SaaS software business-model for cooperatives in Nigeria. Put simply, we were spending more money than we could generate with that model. We tried but couldn't secure the capital we needed to pivot the business to a bank-led model (as opposed to a SaaS-led model). I know I should say a lot more on this (I have my notes prepared), and I intend to do so in the near future, including our $8m acquisition offer that almost (term sheet signed, final purchase agreement concluded) but didn’t close (big lessons learned) and our plans (via BLA) to pursue an enterprise-only model for our core “Riby CoBanking” software.
  • I am super grateful to our teams, customers, co-founders/partners, investors, and supporters, and I am sorry we didn’t make Riby Nigeria the smashing success we had promised, hoped for, and worked so hard for.

BLA and The Gap Years:

  • The last three years have been very rocky in many ways (personal/micro and global/macro). BLA/BLA companies are growing, and we have seen some joyful outcomes in our "studio-active" portfolio companies like MeatClub (founded and led by Mrs. Olaedo Salami ), PlaX/SME Capital (led by Adepegba Oduntan ); and others like TradeBuza (founded and led by Nonso Eze ) and Keble (Techstars ‘22) (founded and led by Josemaria Agulanna and Emmanuel Oballa ) where we made angel investments.
  • MeatClub is a female-led and female-run food-commerce business (online ordering of fresh protein products delivered to homes and restaurants) with 15 employees, and they continue to grow profitably year-on-year with zero external funding so far.
  • PlaX/SME Capital builds software for social benefits management and development programs, with a team of about 18 people (half are engineers) who have done amazing work over the years. PlaX now has two years of runway in the bank and should become "default alive" soon. PlaX has delivered programs for the World Bank/BOI, Kwara State, Lagos State, NBS, NEPC, Presidency/FGN etc… and is poised for continental growth. PlaX is 100% self-funded so far (by its founding partners and reinvested revenue) and is profitable.
  • I explored some exciting opportunities via some of our BLA experiments. Titanium Africa aims to build 10,000 homes across Africa, starting with Yaba, Lagos, where the first multi-family housing unit is being built for 8 families (due for completion this year). Zebrra had huge promise but instead left us/me with debt (now largely handled). Litro was short, intense and joyful work, and we got our Canadian MSB permit (Money Service Business), but we didn’t/couldn't launch. BLA joined the upcoming Enzzyme Fund (fingers crossed), and I became a founding member of the FinTech CEOs Forum (Nigeria).
  • One person I will single out at this time on the business side is Akinbayo A. . Let’s just say Akinbayo and his team were super kind to me and helped resolve and restructure our debt situation in the most friendly way anyone could ever ask for. Thank you, Akinbayo and team. I am grateful for your patience, kindness and support throughout the process of resolving this difficult situation.

So What’s Next:

  • 2024 has been a year of recalibration and rejuvenation. I’ve spent a lot of time with my family in the past year and renewed my faith.
  • For many years now, both for my work in Venture and for our family, we believe the US has an important role to play, and we have been “back and forth” for a while on this. So we decided, as a family (and studio), to begin spending more time in the US (Atlanta), while we continue to support/guide the growth of our Nigerian business and our African dreams. That’s a developing story, and I believe this move will be instrumental in our/my next chapter.
  • A lot will happen in the next 12 to 18 months (already started—keep praying for us), and I expect to share some exciting news in the coming months.
  • At this time, I just want to thank everyone who reads my stories (posts), asks me, “Salami, how far with Riby or BLA…,” and everyone who continues to support our mission. I am grateful. I have come this far because of you, and I know truly, it takes a village.
