My Journey with the Walter Bruce Foundation and Advocacy for Homelessness, Substance Abuse, and Mental Health
The experience of homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health struggles is a profound issue that touches countless lives across America. During my time in the United States, particularly in cities like Tulsa and Houston, I have witnessed firsthand the extent of these challenges. What strikes me the most is how these issues often go beyond just physical deprivation—they erode dignity, hope, and the sense of belonging every human deserves.
This realization led me to align with organizations that address these problems head-on. One such incredible initiative is The Walter Bruce Foundation (WBF), where I had the privilege to contribute my efforts towards serving the homeless in Dallas.
At the Walter Bruce Foundation, our mission is rooted in compassion and community service. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, we aim to address critical issues like hunger, homelessness, and food insecurity, not just locally in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but globally, with significant efforts underway in Africa. By providing food, clothing, blankets, and other essential resources, WBF strives to restore dignity to those who feel isolated and overlooked. Every month, the foundation serves up to 1,000 individuals, and the vision is to expand this number significantly in the years ahead, reaching and positively impacting even more lives.
My Personal Connection and Commitment to Change
Coming from Ghana, I have always been passionate about charity work. Growing up, I was actively involved in initiatives aimed at supporting orphans and vulnerable communities. When I moved to the U.S., I saw parallels between these charitable needs and the struggles faced by homeless individuals here, whether through hunger, lack of shelter, or mental health issues exacerbated by poverty. My journey with WBF gave me a platform to translate this passion into tangible action.
Through my engagement with WBF, I not only contributed to immediate relief efforts but also deepened my understanding of systemic issues that perpetuate poverty and homelessness. This experience reaffirmed my desire to use my skills in data analytics to drive change. I co-authored a paper titled "Leveraging Data Analytics to Optimize Government Interventions for Homelessness, Substance Abuse, and Mental Health," which explores how evidence-based policymaking can enhance public health initiatives and resource allocation.

The Broader Picture: Homelessness in America
Homelessness in America is a complex and growing issue, with many individuals facing intersecting challenges such as mental illness, substance abuse, and systemic barriers to housing and employment. The lack of affordable housing and access to healthcare only exacerbates the crisis. Addressing these issues requires not only compassion but also strategic action supported by robust data.
My Vision for the Future
My involvement with WBF has strengthened my resolve to contribute to public health initiatives by leveraging my expertise in data-driven decision-making. By applying analytics, I aim to help organizations optimize their resources, target interventions effectively, and maximize their impact. Homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health issues are not just problems to be managed—they are opportunities to rebuild lives, restore dignity, and create a more equitable society. As WBF looks to grow its impact, partnering with local businesses, restaurants, and donors, I am inspired by their unwavering commitment to being a blessing to the community. Their vision to provide medical aid, shelters, and surplus food distribution aligns perfectly with my personal mission to make a difference
Future Projects with Analytics
