My Letter To You This Year

My Letter To You This Year

Dear Business Owner,

A lot of people find it cliche to write new year goals while others believe that the beginning of the year is indeed the best time to be clear on what needs to be achieved (goal-setting).

I am on the table that the New Year is the best time to set the tone of the year.

However, I would like to tell us that there are certain things to take into perspective as you plan for this year:

  • Identify your Roses and Thorns: This is a great activity for you to partake in that will help you review the past year. Roses are indeed sweet-smelling beautiful things while the thorns are those things that didn’t quite go as well as they ought to. I did this exercise with myself and my teams and I can assure you that it is very liberating and helps to set the tone for the year.

  • Goal Clarity: In writing goals, clarity is KING. By definition: Goal setting is the process of defining specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives that an individual or organization aims to achieve. SMART goals are the best way to set goals for this New Year.

  • Creating a Strategy: When you have set SMART goals, the next step is to have a strategy. This is indeed the HOW-PATH, this would help you to clearly not just articulate your goals but the actual roadmap towards achieving them.

  • Accountability: Find an accountability partner or coach. This is important because we all need to be held accountable to someone we recognize and respect. Find your person and share these strategic goals with them - could be your partner, friend, coach, or otherwise.

  • Review Points: Identify the exact dates in the year you will want to review your progress. I recommend quarterly reviews because you need to give yourself and your team actual time to work on these set goals.

The beginning of the year is a great time to set goals and create a strategy to kickstart the year. If you are reading this and you are an existing business owner I would like to announce to you that the changes start with you and then trickle down to your team.

For your team, I would recommend you do the following this January:

  1. Share the business objectives of the year with your team
  2. Set clear KPIs for your team
  3. Be more intentional about learning and development to increase the team’s productivity

This year I am available for you to help your business work the way it really should.
