My Manager Knows I Want A Raise - Replay
Happy Holidays!
Here’s a replay of a favorite salary story. It emphasizes the importance of clearly saying what you want.
Mia* wanted to make more money at her job. She didn’t want to ask for a salary increase. Instead, she thought she would work even harder and wait for her annual performance review in a few months.
When I asked her what was getting in the way of talking to her manager about it she told me that her manager, Sophie*, already knew she wanted more money.
The conversation went something like this:
Me: “How does Sophie know that you want to make more money?”
Mia: “Of course, she knows. Everyone wants to make more money.”
Me: “But have you specifically told her that it’s important to you now?”
Mia: “No, but I shouldn’t have to say it, she should just know.”
From my years in corporate Human Resources, I know what happens at work. Managers have a certain amount of money they can give to their staff. If a manager has 5 direct reports who are all doing a good job and 1 of them clearly explains that a salary increase is important to them, that’s the person who is likely to get more money.
Mia did have the difficult conversation with Sophie. She did not get a raise right away but at her annual review she got a higher increase because she let her manager know it was important to her.

Learning for Mia:
· Don’t assume your boss knows you want more money. You need to have the uncomfortable conversation.
Learning for You:
· You need to clearly ask for what you want.
· If you don’t ask, someone else might and they could get the raise you want.
