My Space Barcelona proposes the 10 emblematic buildings of Barcelona
An architectural and artistic stroll through the city of Barcelona
There is no doubt that Barcelona is a city with buildings of an enviable architectural quality, and this is one of the most important attractions for anyone who sets foot in it.
Apart from our greatest icon, the Sagrada Familia (Gaudi's eldest daughter), and other monuments and essential buildings in Barcelona such as the palace of Montjuïc, the mythical Agbar tower or the Cathedral, in the city you can find numerous buildings with very different histories and styles that also deserve to be observed with the same eyes of admiration.
From an architectural but also artistic point of view, we present you 10 emblematic buildings in Barcelona where we guarantee that, at least in most of them, you won't feel threatened by dozens of cameras and phones shooting pictures next to your head (or so we hope).
👉By the way, don't forget to book a My Space Barcelona apartment near one of Barcelona's most emblematic buildings!
Here we go:
1- Recinto del Hospital de Sant Pau
Arquitecto: Lluís Domènech i Montaner
Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1967 and a World Heritage Site in 1997 by UNESCO, the Hospital de Sant Pau site is one of the most important modernist buildings in the world and the largest in Europe. The entire site is made up of thirteen buildings and pavilions in the modernist style, inaugurated in 1930 to perform hospital functions at the time.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the site was vacated as a result of the construction of new and more modern facilities, better suited to current technologies. It was at this time that the rehabilitation of the pavilions began and guided tours of the entire site began to be organized; a must for any lover of modernism!

2- Palau de la Música Catalana
Architect: Lluís Domènech i Montaner
Built between 1905 and 1908, the Palau de la Música is one of the greatest representatives of Catalan modernism and currently one of the most important concert halls in the country. A luminous interior and an endless number of stained glass windows make the music that sounds within its walls even more spectacular. Its exterior is of an enviable architectural quality that combines baroque and modernist elements with details reminiscent of music.
We are sure that the moment you enter the concert hall, it will be when your eyes will be shocked and widen even more when you contemplate so much beauty. Look up and contemplate that marvelous ceiling that will make you forget to look down again.

3- Museu Blau
Architect (firm): Herzog & de Meuron
The Blau Museum was designed exclusively for the celebration of the Universal Forum of Cultures in 2004. Thought as a meeting place in the city, the building is endowed with a special singularity, since after the celebration of the Forum, the function of the building took a small leap and became the new Museum of Natural Sciences of the City of Barcelona, finding in its interior unique species of animals.
In addition, since 2005 the museum houses an exhibition on the future of the city and sustainable development. Next to it we find the Diagonal 00 Tower, an eye-catching skyscraper 110 meters high that is a clear example of the most technological architecture.

4- Mies van der Rohe German Pavilion
Architect: Mies Van der Rohe
A few meters from the Fountain of Montjuïc (another symbol of essential visit), is this hidden building of the architect Mies Van der Rohe, which gave rise to what was once the National Pavilion of Germany for the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929.
It is composed of a set of different types of glass, steel and marble that give life to a symbolic work of the modern movement. However, what we currently see is a replica of the original building that was built after the closure of the Exhibition. It is open to the public every day from 1oh to 2oh.

5- Gehry's fish
Architect: Frank Gehry
Curious building that was a symbol of the Post-Olympic Barcelona. In 1992, the city of Barcelona was further illuminated in preparation for the Olympic Games, when the new Olympic port was born, led by the Mapfre tower and the Hotel Arts. These two towers, which to this day continue to be protagonists on the seafront of Barcelona, have at their feet a sculpture in the shape of a fish that seems ready to dive straight into the Mediterranean Sea known as the goldfish (by Gehry).
It is really a network of intertwined metal grids, with a structure that takes on a golden color when the sun's rays hit it. A real spectacle to see how its "scales" gradually change tone.

6 - Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart
Architect: Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia
The eyes of Barcelona. It is the highest point of the city (about 520 meters above sea level), so it is one of the most easily visible buildings, considering its privileged location at the top of the Tibidabo mountain. We recommend that you look up at night and look for it, it is clearly visible from many parts of the city!
It is a neo-Gothic style temple, designed by the architect Enric Sagnier in the early twentieth century and completed by his son in 1961. It consists of an interior crypt, the church and the characteristic structure of the Sacred Heart, which stands out on its front facade. This sculpture was demolished and melted down during the Civil War (to produce metal, according to theories), so the current one is a replica.

7- MediaTIC Building
Architect: Enrique Ruiz Geli
Inaugurated in 2010, this is an innovative building, designed as a meeting point for companies and professionals, focused on information and communication technologies (hence the TIC). The curious thing about the building is its 4 facades all different from each other that give a different appearance depending on the orientation, with open floors and covered with a kind of external shell.
For its construction, of course, new architectural technologies were applied, but also took into account more efficient construction methods, such as the use of ETFE, an innovative material that achieves energy savings above the average worldwide.

8- MACBA
Architect: Richard Meier
Among the narrow streets of the mythical Raval neighborhood is the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) built during the second half of the twentieth century. Currently, the MACBA is declared a museum of national interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The most characteristic element of the structure is a cylindrical volume that crosses all the floors and forms the different exhibition areas. On Saturdays from 16:00 to 20:00h the entrance is free. Also, it is a good time to remember that many museums in the city are free on the first Sunday of each month, including this one. So, now you have no excuse!

9- Santa Caterina Market Building
Architect and architect: Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue
It arises from the rehabilitation of the old Santa Caterina market, in the Ciutat Vella of Barcelona, which was carried out by the aforementioned Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. The most characteristic feature of its structure is the ingenious roof whose aim is to seek a connection with the site, while at the same time trying to envelop and blend in with the old market structure.
During the remodeling of the market, archaeological remains of the old convent on which the market was built were found, which can be seen in the basement as part of the MUHBA (Museum of History of Barcelona).

10 - An example of Gaudi's legacy: Casa Batllo.
Architect: (The great) Antonio Gaudí
Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell, Torre Bellesguard... Obviously, if we talk about Barcelona, we could not finish this post without mentioning Antonio Gaudí. In the middle of Passeig de Gràcia, as many know, is one of the most important works of the architect representative of Catalan modernism. Casa Batlló, a World Heritage Site since 2005, is a tribute by the architect to the forms of nature that culminates with a vault that resembles the silhouette of a dragon, which has much to do with the legend of Sant Jordi.
Nearby is the Casa Milà also known as La Pedrera. Both are a must-see both inside and out.
