My Top Tips And Truths About Entrepreneurship

Forget Perfect

My golden rule: “Manage with the resources that you have, and if you cannot, focus your energy on securing the resources that you are missing.” Perfection is the enemy, so do not let it hold you back. Keep it simple and focus on the main task at hand; for example, worrying about how a report should look rather than the content of the report. Many people start a business but never take off because they drown in secondary worries and strive for perfection. Improvements can be made later on when you have the basics in place. Do not let fear and insecurity of imperfections hold you back.

Do not build things from scratch

If it is available off the shelf, then there is no need to build something from scratch. Your time is just as important as your resources! Do not reinvent the wheel!

Spread the Word

Most assume that they are safer not disclosing their new business venture to those around them. I beg to differ. You are not setting yourself up for failure. On the contrary, you are setting the bar high for yourself to succeed. Those around you are likely to offer support and valuable input as well as introductions to others who can benefit your business.

Failing is not embarrassing

Do not worry about failure. The fact that you started means you have already done more than the vast majority of others. Do not let the opinion of friends, family, or even strangers affect you negatively. Live on your own terms, and remember that your fight will always be your own fight. You are likely to fail and fail again before you succeed.

Becoming your own boss

Is both a liberating and challenging experience. Individuals who are self-motivated and reasonably comfortable taking risks will thrive in an environment where they can make their own decisions and learn from their own mistakes. You must also be prepared for some of the hardest work and longest hours you have ever worked before because start-ups require 110%. The flexibility and freedom of managing yourself come with a price.

In closing, keep it simple. Do not try to reinvent the wheel. If others are succeeding, then you can succeed too. Stop planning and start doing. Stop overthinking. Trust in your vision. Be confident in yourself and accept advice from those that inspire and support you. Focus on the results rather than perfecting the process. Perfection is a journey and will come hand in hand with experience.

I always say, “Whoever does the business best will always win the lion’s share and in tough markets, maybe the full share.”
