Natural Hydrogen: A Potential Game Changer for Clean Energy

This is really good news, according to an increasing number of sources like U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) or Science Magazine , Hundreds of years' worth of cleaner-than-green hydrogen energy are sitting in rock deposits and exploitable like natural gas. A new gold hydrogen rush could start shortly.

In fact, the quest for clean, sustainable energy sources has taken center stage in the global conversation, and recent discoveries have ignited excitement around a potentially revolutionary contender: natural #hydrogen. I discovered the topic during the H-Nat Summit in 2023 in Perth and this then my interest in growing continuously. This naturally occurring form of hydrogen, unlike its fossil fuel counterpart, holds the alluring promise of being #renewable, abundant, and #carbon-free. However, unlocking its potential hinges on overcoming significant scientific, technological, and environmental hurdles.

For decades, the narrative surrounding hydrogen as an energy source primarily focused on its production through electrolysis, a reliable process that utilizes electricity to split water molecules. While this approach offers a good and clean pathway, it hinges on both costs and availability of renewable electricity sources where significant investments and spaces are required. However, a paradigm shift has been emerging since the increase number of discoveries of naturally occurring hydrogen deposits deep within the Earth's crust. These discoveries, coupled with an increasing involvement of experts challeng the long-held belief that hydrogen existed solely in the form of fossil fuels.

Unlike conventional fossil fuels like natural gas, which take millions of years to form from organic matter, natural hydrogen is constantly being produced through the interaction of water with iron-rich minerals under high pressure and temperature. This ongoing geological process imbues natural hydrogen with the potential to be a truly renewable energy source, unlike its finite fossil fuel counterparts.

Interesting article! I am concern with cost of extraction and the overall environmental impact. Gas fracking in the 2000s led to many issues with water.

This process, known as diagenesis, can result in the decomposition of complex organic molecules, releasing hydrogen along with other hydrocarbons. The hydrogen content in natural gas is one example of how geological processes contribute to the formation of hydrogen-containing compounds beneath the Earth's surface. While hydrogen can be present in soil and organic matter, it is not directly associated with the phenomenon of fairy circles. The formation of fairy circles is more related to ecological and environmental factors in specific regions, such as arid landscapes.
