Navigating Business in War-Torn Regions – Stories of Triumph from Ukraine and Lebanon
Welcome to this edition of Resilience Rise, where we delve into stories of entrepreneurs who have defied the odds in the world’s most challenging regions. Today, we’re looking at Ukraine and Lebanon – countries where resilience is an asset and a survival tool. Despite the constant backdrop of conflict, a crumbling economy, and daily struggles, entrepreneurs continue to innovate, adapting to realities that challenge even the most seasoned business minds. Let’s explore their stories and learn what drives their relentless pursuit of success.
Ukraine: Innovating Under Fire
In Ukraine, the ongoing conflict with Russia has destabilized nearly every aspect of life, including business. Infrastructure is continually at risk, making reliable internet and electricity a rare commodity. Supplies and goods are scarce, and the workforce is frequently displaced. Yet, in this volatile environment, Ukrainian entrepreneurs have discovered new ways to adapt, protect, and support their communities through innovation.
Take Oleksandr Smirnov, founder of SafeRoute, a mobile app initially developed for public commuting. Smirnov and his team retooled the app’s core functionality when the war escalated, turning it into a life-saving navigation tool that alerts users to nearby danger zones and live conflict updates. It quickly became indispensable, helping millions of Ukrainians safely navigate their daily lives amidst uncertainty. Operating with limited internet, energy shortages, and relocating staff to safer locations, Smirnov leaned into what he calls “emergency entrepreneurship” – the ability to respond immediately and effectively to crises. Today, SafeRoute is recognized worldwide, and Smirnov’s company is sustaining itself and expanding its service into other high-risk areas globally.
Another inspiring story from Ukraine is Anastasiya Kornienko, co-founder of Revive Ukraine, a business that supplies sustainable construction materials to rebuild war-damaged buildings. With the supply chain disruptions, Anastasiya and her team began sourcing materials locally, often repurposing debris from damaged structures to make eco-friendly bricks and materials. Her company employs citizens displaced by the conflict, providing much-needed jobs and stability in a turbulent economy. Revive Ukraine’s mission is more than rebuilding structures – it’s about restoring hope and resilience in Ukrainian communities, one building at a time.
Lebanon: Thriving Amidst Economic Collapse
Lebanon has faced years of economic hardship compounded by regional instability, currency collapse, and severe resource shortages. In such an environment, resilience and adaptability aren’t just valued – they’re essential. Businesses must grapple with currency fluctuations, high inflation, import issues, and a general breakdown of public services. Yet, against these odds, Lebanese entrepreneurs have shown an unmatched capacity for innovation and problem-solving.
Lara Bechara, the founder of EcoLeb, saw an opportunity in Lebanon’s broken waste management system. With recycling services nearly nonexistent and waste piling up in the streets, Bechara launched EcoLeb, a company that creates sustainable packaging from recycled materials sourced locally. By establishing a grassroots recycling network, Bechara not only helped reduce waste but also developed a sustainable supply chain that relied entirely on Lebanese resources. Her business has grown into a beacon for sustainability in Lebanon, employing locals and inspiring a new wave of eco-conscious entrepreneurship in a country that desperately needs such solutions.
In another example, Ziad Aoun, founder of LebResilience, has built a network of shared, solar-powered workspaces that provide reliable electricity and internet for remote workers and small business owners affected by frequent power outages. Recognizing that power shortages are a daily obstacle, Aoun transformed this limitation into a business opportunity. His workspaces have become a sanctuary for local businesses and freelancers, enabling them to continue working and connecting with clients despite the national energy crisis. LebResilience now operates multiple hubs across Beirut and other major cities, creating community spaces that foster collaboration and resilience.

Lessons in Resilient Entrepreneurship from Ukraine and Lebanon
What can we learn from entrepreneurs thriving in such extreme conditions? Here are some key takeaways:
1. Adaptability as a Core Skill: Smirnov and Bechara’s stories show that rigid business models don’t survive in high-stress environments. Entrepreneurs in conflict zones must pivot quickly, retool products, and adapt their strategies to meet immediate needs.
2. Innovative Resource Management: With limited external resources, these entrepreneurs mastered the art of resourcefulness. Whether by repurposing local materials or finding alternative sources of power, they turned constraints into creative solutions that serve their businesses and communities.
3. A Strong Sense of Mission: For each of these entrepreneurs, business success is tied to a deeper purpose – supporting their communities and improving lives. This mission-driven approach fuels their resilience, keeps them grounded, and makes their businesses essential in times of crisis.
4. Community-Centered Resilience: Both Revive Ukraine and LebResilience prioritize community impact. They have built networks that provide stability and create jobs, not just for profit but to help their communities rise above adversity. This deep-rooted focus on community resilience creates lasting value beyond mere survival.
