Introduction
Have you ever wondered if AI is advancing so rapidly that we haven't really taken care of the foundations and risk management?
That's how I feel sometimes when I see the dizzying speed at which we're adopting generative AI in the business world.
I remember this feeling when implementing large-scale systems.
The excitement was palpable, but so was the vertigo. Today, with generative AI, that feeling is multiplied by a thousand. It's as if we were on a technological roller coaster, excited by the adrenaline, but aware that a loose screw could change everything.
It's not about slowing down innovation.
On the contrary. It's about building better "brakes" so we can go faster and further. As the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure". And in the world of AI, prevention means understanding and managing risks.
According to a recent PwC study, almost 100% of business leaders are prioritizing at least one AI-related initiative in the short term.
But are we really prepared for this? Only 35% of executives say their company will focus on improving AI system governance in the next 12 months.
Let's review what I've learned, not just the risks, but how to prevent them and act in case they occur.
Understanding the Risks of Generative AI
When I implemented SAP at Coca-Cola FEMSA for more than 100,000 employees, I thought I had seen all possible risks in technology. But generative AI? That's a whole other level.
Based on my experience and research from Harvard Business Review, PwC, McKinsey, and the book: The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian, I've identified four major risk categories that every company must consider:
𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: People misuse, incorrectly apply, misrepresent, and even become overly dependent. As HBR points out, "misuse and misapplication can occur when people don't understand AI's limitations or use it for unethical purposes".
𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: This is where my technology experience makes me extra alert. We're talking about model complexity, biased results, and risks in training data. PwC warns: "The complexity of AI models makes them difficult to understand and audit completely".
𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: This is the area that fascinates me the most. Privacy, data security, model explainability, legal and reputational risks... It's a minefield of challenges. As McKinsey says, "business risks directly affect a company's operations and reputation".
𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀: This is the elephant in the room that many prefer to ignore. But trust me, as someone who has navigated regulatory complexities across multiple industries, I tell you: ignoring them is not an option. Regulations are evolving as fast as the technology itself.

The AI landscape is constantly evolving. From my understanding of all this information, I see the following:
Keep an eye on regulatory developments. As McKinsey says: "Companies must anticipate and prepare for regulatory changes". Invest in the continuous development of internal capabilities.
