8. NAVIGATING INTERNATIONAL MARKETS: A GUIDE TO IMPORTING GOODS FROM CHINA TO KENYA (AIR)
When sourcing goods globally, one highly effective strategy adopted by many companies is direct importation from China. This approach has yielded remarkable success. China produces all types of products, from home furniture and electronics to building materials and accessories.
When dealing with corporate clients, it's important to keep prices low to be competitive and one way to achieve this is to ship goods directly from manufacturers in China. Understanding how to import from China is essential and today, we will dive into it extensively.
So, grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s explore the intricacies of international trade and the steps needed to bring Chinese products to Kenya.
1. Finding items you can import
Importing from China to Kenya requires strategic choices. Before diving in, thorough research is essential. Gather detailed information about the items you intend to import, including their descriptions, dimensions, and, if possible, samples. This data will help you calculate tariffs and other costs. When selecting products to import from China to Kenya, consider:
One strategy I employ is going to Aliexpress.com, which arguably has the widest product selection. Once there, select the niche you're getting into and search away!
Before importing anything in bulk on sites such as Alibaba or MadeInChina, order samples first from the supplier and if they don’t give samples, you can find the items on Aliexpress at a slightly higher price. For the items to arrive in Kenya in 2 weeks, look for a product that has Cainiao shipping option. If you're shipping items for personal use and not for your business , you can stop here, this is the best way to do it for any small purchases.
2. Shipping times from China to Kenya
Shipping goods from China to Kenya involves several factors that influence the duration of the shipment, including weight, method of shipment, customisation etc.
Here are some insights based on different shipping methods:
3. Finding the best suppliers
Your chosen supplier will not only handle your orders but also oversee the shipping and export processes. Given that China is a major global manufacturing hub, finding a reliable supplier can indeed be challenging. Here are some reputable platforms where you can explore shipping companies and connect with suppliers:
4. Research your products and suppliers
When dealing with suppliers, it’s essential to thoroughly understand the products you’re purchasing. Here are some steps to ensure a successful procurement process:
The image below shows an example of a great supplier, with more than 4,000 products sold, 747 reviews with a 5 star rating.
5. Clearing agents and shipping agents
To import any commodity into Kenya, it is essential to engage the services of a clearing agent and in most cases, the shipping agent acts as a clearing agent. These agents play a crucial role in handling the necessary import documentation through Kenyan customs. Once the documents are processed electronically, the clearing agent will facilitate the clearance of your items on your behalf and you can pick them up in Nairobi without the hustle.
One should expect to pay $14 per KG for air freight and $500 per cubic metre for sea shipping. The minimum shipping quantity is 5 KG for air freight when using 3rd party shippers not on Aliexpress’ shipping options.
The contacts for the shippers can be found on their websites, I'll share a few below.

The process is quite direct and involves receiving an address from the shipper of their consolidation warehouse in China, sending this to the supplier, and paying and picking up the goods at their offices in Kenya, mostly Eastleign. This usually takes 14 days to 30 days using air freight. Sea freight will be discussed in a later article.
Some shipping companies I've personally worked with include:
General Waruingi Street

Speedaf Nairobi Office - 0741000888

6. Making an order
Once you have selected your products, and found the right supplier and shipping agent, it's time to make an order. Retail online platforms provide a quick and easy way to check out but for wholesalers, the process might be a bit lengthy involving negotiations, sending samples, discussing minimum order quantities and more. They'll be discussed below in detail.
7. Calculate shipping and importation costs
Let’s break down the key expenses, especially for those shipping bulky items via sea freight, for air freight, this should not worry you as it is always included in the shipping fee paid to the shippers.
Remember to factor in these costs when planning your importation process. Proper calculation and compliance with regulations will help ensure a smooth import experience. For more information on levies and taxes applicable, visit: Importing & Exporting - KRA
