Navigating the Path to a Prestigious Law Firm Internship: Dos and Don'ts - An open letter to law students and lecturers

Introduction

Internships at prestigious commercial law firms are more than just a step on the career ladder; they are a gateway to the legal profession. At Reagan Blankfein Gates Legal Practitioners (RBGLP), we value interns as future members of the profession, representing its next generation of talent. Unfortunately, our recent experience in reviewing internship applications has exposed a troubling decline in standards among applicants.

This article aims to provide a roadmap for law students aspiring to secure internships while also addressing lecturers and educators to emphasise the critical role they play in preparing students for these opportunities.

A Troubling Trend in Internship Applications

Over the past few days and weeks, RBGLP has received a significant number of internship applications for our summer internship programme, many of which have fallen far short of the standards expected from candidates aspiring to join the legal profession.

Examples of Problematic Applications

  1. Incomplete Submissions: Several applicants sent only a couple of lines inquiring about internships without attaching formal applications or supporting documents.
  2. Unexplained Recommendations: One applicant simply sent a letter of recommendation with no explanation, leaving us to wonder why it was sent to us.
  3. Poor Communication Skills: Many applications contained glaring grammatical errors, poorly constructed sentences, and informal tones inappropriate for professional correspondence.
  4. Misunderstanding of Terms: A promising applicant, when asked if they had a "School Certificate," replied with a question asking if we meant a "Grade Twelve Certificate." Despite our follow-up, no clarification has been provided.
  5. Mediocre Academic Records: A significant proportion of applicants presented less-than-stellar results without any attempt to explain mitigating circumstances or demonstrate compensatory strengths.
  6. Casual Attitude: Some applicants treated the application process with the informality of social media comments or WhatsApp messages, reflecting a lack of seriousness.

Addressing the Problem: Why Professionalism Matters

Internship applications are often the first impression a candidate makes on a potential employer. A lack of professionalism suggests an inability to meet the high standards required in legal practice and reflects poorly on the individual and their institution.

High-performing firms like RBGLP prioritise excellence, and our internship programmes are designed to prepare students for demanding legal environments. An applicant’s casual approach to the process suggests that they may not possess the dedication or capability to thrive in such a setting.

Dos and Don’ts of Securing a Prestigious Internship

1. Conduct Thorough Research

  • Understand the Firm: Learn about the firm’s areas of practice, its values, and recent achievements. Tailor your application to reflect this knowledge.
  • Know the Requirements: Familiarise yourself with the application process and ensure you meet the eligibility criteria.

2. Craft a Professional Application

  • Cover Letter: Write a formal letter introducing yourself, explaining why you are interested in the firm, and highlighting your suitability for the role.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Present a structured CV that showcases your education, achievements, relevant experience, and skills.
  • Supporting Documents: Include academic transcripts, certificates, and letters of recommendation, all appropriately formatted and contextualised.

3. Demonstrate Professionalism

  • Attention to Detail: Proofread your application to eliminate errors and ensure clarity.
  • Formal Language: Use clear, professional language throughout your correspondence.
  • Follow Deadlines: Submit your application on time and respond promptly to follow-ups.

4. Highlight Practical Experience

  • Extracurricular Activities: Mention moot courts, debate clubs, volunteer work, or other activities that demonstrate your initiative and skills.
  • Transferable Skills: Showcase qualities such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability.

5. Prioritise Academic Excellence

  • Provide Context: If your academic performance is not stellar, explain any mitigating circumstances and emphasise other strengths.

6. Avoid Common Mistakes

  • Incomplete Applications: Ensure all required documents are included and properly formatted.
  • Casual Tone: Avoid informal language or slang in your application.
  • Entitlement: Approach the process with humility and respect, understanding that internships are competitive opportunities.

The Role of Lecturers and Educators

Educators have a significant role in shaping the next generation of legal professionals. It is essential for law schools to:

  • Teach Practical Skills: Incorporate modules on professional writing, research skills, and application preparation.
  • Reinforce Professionalism: Emphasise the importance of formal communication and adherence to professional standards.
  • Provide Constructive Feedback: Critique students’ written work and help them refine their communication skills.
  • Promote Real-World Exposure: Encourage participation in moot courts, internships, and other practical activities.

Conclusion: First Impressions Matter

An internship application is a reflection of your ambition, capability, and professionalism. There is no second chance to make a first impression, and a poorly executed application can close doors to invaluable opportunities.

At RBGLP, we value excellence and are committed to nurturing future legal professionals. However, candidates must meet us halfway by demonstrating their readiness to thrive in a professional environment.

To students: treat your internship application with the seriousness it deserves. To lecturers: equip your students with the tools they need to succeed. Together, we can ensure that the next generation of lawyers is prepared to meet the high standards of the legal profession.
