Navigating Uncertainty: An Update
After nine months of posting weekly thoughts here on Navigating Uncertainty, I’ve decided to pause and use this week to reflect on what I’ve learned while sharing some interesting stats. In general, the response has been better than expected and I remain grateful for the support and continued engagement of so many loyal readers. The newsletter currently has a subscriber count of around 23,000 here on Substack and another 12,000 or so onLinkedIn. Since my launch of the newsletter in July 2023, there have been more than 500,000 views of the articles I’ve written. In addition, the Navigating Uncertainty podcast and radio show reaches tens of thousands of listeners each week.
The Last Nine Months: Some Reflections
One of the real benefits of forcing myself to write weekly is the routine helps me congeal my thinking around important issues. Because I pride myself on being a generalist, I spend hours each week scanning a wide variety of sources that help keep me informed. But I don’t want to be, as I note in my new book, “a jackass of many pursuits,” I use my weekly pieces to dive deeper into one particular topic. This exercise helps balance my natural interest in breadth with some depth.
While I write to communicate my ideas, the act of writing has proven essential in the formation of those ideas. For instance, when I sat down to write about the impact of mortgage rates on housing markets and the US consumer, I thought I would write about how higher rates would equate to lower prices and a weaker consumer. But the more I dug into the topic, the more I realized that higher rates would reduce the supply of homes for sale as consumers would retain low, locked-in mortgage rates. Yes, higher rates implied lower demand, but much higher rates, it turned out, also reduced supply. The impact on the housing market was ultimately unclear to me, so I decided to ask readers with a poll at the end of my article. 47% felt housing prices would fall, while 50% felt they’d stay flat or rise.

The piece I wrote over the last nine months that generated the most views was about the death of global multilateralism. In it, I wrote about how the world was bifurcating into two global economic ecosystems based on geopolitical allegiances, and one casualty of the process was that global multilateralism no longer worked. The article also took the top spot in terms of the percentage of subscribers that read it (more than 30%).

Finally, the post that inspired the most reaction, both positive and negative, in my inbox as well as online, was a piece I wrote about the need for US to accelerate the extraction of hydrocarbons in America. I went on to argue that doing so might lower inflation by lowering energy prices, improve global stability by depriving Russia and Iran of windfall profits from high energy prices, and…drumroll please… that more fossil fuels from the USA would actually help the environment. The key qualifier to the last point, which spurred a lot of feedback, was “from the USA.”

The Next Nine Months: Some Changes
Because I find myself spending so much time each week (almost a full day) drafting these posts, I have decided to convert Navigating Uncertainty to a newsletter that is published approximately twice a month. In addition, I am planning to offer more exclusive content to paid subscribers. I’ll also be experimenting with different media to deliver my thoughts via audio, video, and text and hope to integrate the Navigating Uncertainty podcast with the newsletter.
And because I’ve come to deeply appreciate the diverse community that is forming around Navigating Uncertainty (college students to retired CEOs, academics and journalists, rural and urban, folks from 60+ countries, etc.), I plan to engage with the audience with more frequent polls so we can collectively think about solutions to complex problems.
I’ve been asking many subscribers what they most value about the service and what they'd like me to offer going forward. I want to include you in this process and to get more input. Please note you can both vote and see current poll results by visiting Dr. Mansharamani's free substack site.
Also, it would be helpful to gauge your thinking about the topics that are most appealing to you.
In closing, I want to thank you again for your support and assistance as I work to figure out the best way to contribute to (and benefit from) the awesome Navigating Uncertainty community.
