NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards: The judging week

Last week we were delighted to meet our 2022 NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards finalists in person. They had face-to-face interviews with our judges. The candidates talked to industry leaders about their career so far and shared their views on the benefits modern methods of construction could bring to the industry.

Our judges had a tough job deciding who should be the winner of each category. We can’t wait to reveal the winners at the 25th NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards ceremony at the ICE headquarters in London.

We used this opportunity to ask our finalists about their civil engineering heroes and what inspired them to join the industry. The videos with their answers will be played during the awards ceremony on 25 November 2022.

We thought we’d share this short video to present to you our amazing finalists:

We also asked Stantec marketing and communications manager Katherine Forster, why it is important to support the awards:

“We are proud to sponsor NCE Graduate and Apprentice Awards and celebrate the most inspiring graduates and apprentices with the ideas and passion so critical to the future of our industry. Only by helping to develop their strengths to achieve aspirations can we motivate others to embark on their own civil engineering career journey.”

Fantastic to see WSP in the UK water engineer Nicola Graham feature and no doubt touch on her outstanding work to support the project management and technical design of a £12.4m coastal flood defence scheme and lead our Professional Growth network at WSP London HQ, while championing Future Ready, modern methods of construction. Nicola's by far one of the most competent, composed and studious graduates I've had the pleasure of working with. Best of luck to Phil Sim too, ICE South West Chair's Apprentice, who has recently introduced an award within the region to help recongise and promote the efforts civil engineers are making to tackle the climate emergency, and helped steer the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) towards re-naming what the Graduate and Student Network to the Early Careers Network, in an effort to be more inclusive and better represent the diversity of our membership.
