The Need for African Solidarity

Africans, particularly Nigerians, often demonstrate remarkable empathy and solidarity when crises occur in non-African countries. While this global awareness is commendable, it is disheartening that we lack awareness of the pressing humanitarian challenges within our own continent.

To be clear, advocating for global justice and offering support to other regions is vital. However, there is a noticeable imbalance in how we Africans prioritize external issues over internal ones. Many are unaware of the crises plaguing countries like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where longstanding conflicts have created severe humanitarian emergencies.

In Sudan, a prolonged power struggle has led to widespread violence, massive displacement, and a worsening humanitarian situation. Similarly, the Democratic Republic of Congo faces enduring conflicts that have devastated countless lives. Unfortunately, these stories do not get the visibility and attention they deserve, overshadowed by global headlines and politics of media organizations.

This lack of awareness stems partly from the media’s selective coverage and partly from a failure to actively seek information about Africa’s challenges. As a result, millions remain uninformed about the struggles faced by their neighbors.

While it is admirable to identify with crises in other continents, it is equally important to channel the same energy toward addressing issues closer to home. Prioritizing African challenges does not diminish global empathy; instead, it reflects a commitment to the principle that charity begins at home. A house must first be in order before its residents can effectively contribute to the beauty of others.

Let us, as Africans, take responsibility for our continent by educating ourselves, raising awareness, and actively participating in solutions to the challenges within our borders. Only then can we truly build a stronger, more unified Africa.
