Lowball offers are all too common for many NSAs and demand immediate and urgent attention. For instance, I recently spoke with an experienced notary signing agent in Virginia who was offered a meager $25 for a loan signing. This paltry sum is insulting and reflective of a broader issue that plagues the industry.

Undervaluing NSAs has dire consequences, including potential legal ramifications. First and foremost, it jeopardizes the agents' livelihood, many of whom depend on these earnings to support their families. Additionally, low compensation decreases the quality of service. For instance, when NSAs are not fairly compensated, they may be forced to rush through signings, leading to errors such as missing signatures or incorrect dates, which can result in the invalidation of the entire document and potential legal ramifications.
Why Does This Happen?
Several factors contribute to the persistent undervaluation of NSAs. A significant reason is the lack of standardization in the industry. Without a unified framework for compensation, fees can vary wildly, often to the detriment of the NSA. Additionally, fierce competition among notaries drives prices down. With many agents vying for the same jobs, some feel compelled to accept lowball offers to stay afloat.

2moI had a similar email discussion with a signing service a couple of days ago. I was trying to explain to her that notaries need more pay for large packages, i.e. refinance, HELOC. In Texas, for a HELOC, Cash out file, the services put on us notaries to find a title, lender or attorney office to do the closing at. We have to pay upfront to use one of these offices. The fees that the signing services offers for those type of signings is supposed to include the room fee. So basically the notaries are paid nothing for those type of files. I don’t do the Cash Outs for this very reason. It’s not worth the hassle. I told her that the fees that signing services offers are insulting to notaries when we know how much the services are charging title. It would be nice if the signing services would be a little nicer to us notaries when it comes to pay and being more timely in the payments as well. It would be great too if some services didn’t give 6 page instructions and threats to go along with it. We are all human and mistakes happen. To tell someone that they can’t make mistake, even though it can be corrected, that they won’t be paid for a mistake. Seriously, if every industry did this, we would all be broke.

I don't want to start thinking that you're avoiding my questions, but with all the arguments you made in this piece, I would imagine that you knew that some people would have questions. You had to know that some people would want specifics, and I'm guessing and hoping you were prepared for that. I don't want to keep pestering you about this, but I'm not the only one who would greatly appreciate some answers. Johnny D.'s response shows he's very much interested in what you have to say.
