Neither Half Full Nor Half Empty
We all have heard of the proverbial phrase asking us whether the glass is half full or half empty. The two sides here are generally used rhetorically to show either optimism or pessimism in a given situation. Another interpretation of half empty is to see it as an opportunity to strive for more. I understand our stand can vary according to the situation but still I used to grapple with picking between the two sides until it struck me one day that the glass is neither half full, nor half empty.
Looking at the glass as half full signifies optimism and a spirit of contentment with what we have. It reminds us that we have enough to savor and carry on. It helps us appreciate the bright side. Viewing the situation as half empty can either be slightly pessimistic or help us look at the opportunity. When we see the glass as half empty, we remind ourselves of the scope to make it full. It helps us in striving hard for more, and doing our very best to keep filling it.
While I agree to both the above stands at some level, to me, the glass is neither half full nor half empty.
It is full full- half of it is Water and remaining Air
To me, this statement resonates with acceptance of diversity in our lives and in situations we face. It symbolizes acknowledgment and inclusion of the differences among us. It tells me that even the empty spaces in our life can make our lives complete. Viewing the glass as full full can give us as opportunity to be content with what we have, and at the same time make us strive to change the proportion of water or air or solids or other liquids in it. The glass is always full of success and failure and learning. Whatever we fill or don’t fill in our glass, it is always full with contentment and/or opportunity. :)
