NeoCon 2023: Exploring Emerging Trends in Workplace Design

This summer, Hixson Interior Designers Roselia Harris and Allee Amstutz attended NeoCon 2023 and the Fulton Market Design Days in Chicago, Illinois. The event showcased the latest trends and innovations in design, furniture, and technology for the commercial Interior Design industry. Roselia and Allee came away from the show with four key findings to share:

  • Warm Color Palettes. Many of the vendors visited by Roselia and Allee prominently displayed warmer color palettes. This shift, which was observed across various elements including fabric, carpet, hard surfaces, and furniture, evoked a sense of comfort, tranquility, and even a connection to nature. “We are not only seeing these warm color palettes through the lens of interior environments but also coming from fashion and product design,” said Allee. “I believe this has inspired many designers across the industry.”
  • Bringing the Comfort of Home to the Office. This change was likely intended to blur the lines between home and office environments. Employees who return to the office spaces will experience comfortable surroundings that will nurture well-being and enhance productivity. This movement was also evident in furniture styles. According to Roselia, “furniture pieces on display were more residential in design, but still boasted the durability required for commercial use.”
  • Acoustic Solutions. One of the continuing trends at NeoCon was the emphasis placed on acoustics in the built environment. To combat noise distraction and create a more focused and efficient workplace, designers can include acoustic materials without compromising the original design. Vendors showcased various sound absorption and acoustic-improving solutions such as PET felt (made from recycled plastic bottles!), perforated wood elements, drapery, ceiling elements, and flooring. “It was incredible to see all the possibilities and new solutions for acoustic materials,” said Allee.
  • Power-Filled Moments. Another significant focus at NeoCon was convenient power options. With the increasing reliance on technology in the workplace, it is crucial for employees to have easy access to power sources. Vendors showcased a range of furniture pieces and built-in power outlets that catered to this need. From integrated technology into work surfaces to wireless charging, the options on display aimed to provide employees with the flexibility to work efficiently anywhere. Just how important is this? “The less we need to worry about power for our devices,” said Roselia, “the more we can focus on being connected to our colleagues!”
