Networking Over the Summer: Things to Ponder During the Sun-Kissed Season

Networking Over the Summer: Things to Ponder During the Sun-Kissed Season

Can you believe it's already June? The days are getting longer, the temperatures are rising, and it's time to kick off the summer with a bang (shout out to those in the Southern Hemisphere who are experiencing winter)!

Today we'll dive into the magic of summer, celebrate diversity, discuss important holidays, and learn about some cool events happening around the world. Grab a refreshing beverage (even during summer I know I’ll always prefer my cup of coffee), and sit down for a fun read.

Networking Over the Summer

Summer is not just about soaking up the sun; it's also a fantastic time to expand your network and create meaningful connections. Whether you're a student, a professional, an adventurous spirit, or a friendly introvert like me, here are three things to think about while networking this summer:

a) Attend Local Events: Check out social events, networking mixers, or community gatherings in your area. These offer a fantastic opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds, exchange ideas, and discover mentors or collaborators.

b) Embrace Online Networking: Networking doesn't always have to be face-to-face. Join online communities, professional forums, or social media groups that align with your interests or career aspirations. Connect with people from different walks of life, engage in discussions, and build lasting relationships.

c) Volunteer for a Cause: Use your summer to give back to the community. Participate in volunteer programs or charity events that promote inclusivity and diversity. Not only will you make a positive impact, but you'll also connect with like-minded individuals who share your values.

Celebrating National Holidays, Graduation, and More!

June, July, and August are jam-packed with holidays, graduations, and events that highlight diversity and cultural pride. Here are some significant dates to mark on your summer calendar:

a) Juneteenth (June 19th) is a holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and commemorates independence, resilience, and Black Joy. Be a part of global conversations that educate, inform, and celebrate Black excellence.

b) Pride Month (June): A vibrant celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, Pride Month is all about love, acceptance, and equality. Attend pride parades, support local LGBTQ+ organizations, and show your allyship in promoting diversity and inclusion.

c) Independence Day (July 4th): Celebrate the diversity of the United States on this patriotic day. Attend fireworks displays, cookouts, or community gatherings to embrace the melting pot of cultures and traditions that make the United States unique.

d) Graduation Season: Whether it's high school, college, graduate school or any other milestone, it’s important to celebrate the achievements of your friends and family members while embracing the diverse paths they'll embark on. If you’re graduating, you’ve completed years of studying, pulled all-nighters, and survived countless exams. You’re now ready to take on the real world and start your career. I know that this transition can be daunting. That's why in my article from last month, I shared some tips and tricks that will help you along the way. Check out - Straight Out of College? The Do’s & Dont’s When You’re Fresh Out of College.

Global Happenings: Uniting Cultures Around the World

While summer is a time to enjoy local festivities, I also love learning about different cultures and the wide variety of celebrations taking place around the world.

a) Bastille Day (July 14th): Bastille Day marks the beginning of the French Revolution and France’s commitment to liberty, equality, and fraternity. On this day, celebrate French culture, cuisine, and traditions.

b) Obon Festival (August): In Japan, the Obon Festival is a time to honor ancestors and celebrate their spirits. During this festival, people will participate in traditional dances, visit ancestral graves, and take part in the lantern-floating ceremonies that illuminate the summer nights.

Make the most of these summer months! Celebrate holidays and special occasions and take part in community activities. These are all perfect opportunities to make connections with different people. Wishing you a summer filled with joy, laughter, and beautiful memories. Stay cool and stay kind.

Your friend, Diane.
