Neutrinos from the Milky Way!
Today scientific news
I congratulate my Colleagues of the IceCube experiment, who found evidence of a population of neutrinos coming from the galactic plane!
The news from IceCube 2023 is that at this point the evidence for a neutrino emission from the Milky Way has become significant and hard to dispute.
It is interesting and reassuring that the new results are in agreement with the clues gathered earlier by ANTARES
Personal satisfactions
As a theorist, I have been working on this for many years and have published some work with my friends Andrea Palladino and Maurizio Spurio on this very topic.
According to our results, there were interesting clues in IceCube and other experiments already some time ago:
the figure above concerns exactly these results, presented e.g. here
The same figure is also in the book:

I reproduce the figure here. It's pretty clear that in 2016 there was already an indication of a galactic component from the angular distribution.
And note that this was only one of the three main arguments we had gathered: the other two were about
Apparently we were on the right track. So I would like to reiterate our main conclusions:
A better understanding of the galactic component of neutrinos will help to study the origin of galactic cosmic rays and also to obtain an unbiased picture of extragalactic neutrino emission.
Thanks for reading till here!

PS I report below some of the work on galactic sources, with which I have prepared to discuss these important topics. The slide was just presented to the Italian Society of Astronomy (SAIt) at their meeting in May 2023
