A NEW DAWN AT KYERA FARM COURTESY OF A 20- ACRE DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM

Kyera Farm is about to undergo a transformation with the introduction of a state-of-the-art 20-acre irrigation system. Sprinktech Limited designed, supplied, and installed a 20-acre solar-powered drip irrigation system at Kyeera farm. This cutting-edge irrigation system caters to the irrigation needs of three-and-a-half-year-old Hass avocado trees, symbolising a remarkable stride towards environmentally conscious and economically viable Hass Avocado farming at the farm. Kyeera farm is one of the projects of the Mbarara Archdiocese located in Kyera, Birere Sub-County, Isingiro County, Isingiro District, Western Uganda.

The impressive drip irrigation system is innovative because it is powered by solar energy. It uses a solar-powered water pumping system that daily transfers 80,000 litres of water from the dam to a 100,000-liter reservoir. The water then flows by gravity to all parts of the garden through variable-flow sprinklers, a feature that ensures efficient water distribution.

Using solar power in this system ensures sustainability and eliminates the need for costly fuel and service expenses. The variable flow emitters further optimise the system, ensuring that the trees receive the right amount of water, thereby reducing water wastage and additional costs.

Fr Benedict, the client representative, says, "This system will improve the farm's fortunes. It will enable kyera farm to produce more and generate more income while at the same time reducing the labour expense on the farm."

The farm is optimistic about the potential increase in their yields by more than 50% with the irrigation system.  Irrigation will minimise the rampant fruit drop, especially in the dry season when the plants are water-stressed. This increase in yield will not only boost the farm's income but also contribute to the local economy. Irrigation will also play a significant role in improving the quality of the avocadoes produced and will make them attain export grade. The price of exported Hass Avocadoes is 3000 ugx per kilogram. This price is excellent compared to the current prices on the local market, around 800 ugx per kg. The farm is currently selling to local avocado oil extraction companies.

The installed system has significantly reduced labor costs, a significant concern before Sprinktech installed the irrigation system. Previously, they would use at least ten people per day to irrigate all the plants manually, which was expensive, labour-intensive, and inefficient. Now, only one operator needs to open and close the valves. This efficient system ensures that the appropriate amount of water is delivered to the plant's root zones, relieving the farm of high labour costs.
