A New Year, A New AMP Newsletter Horizon

Where we have been…

For the last year I have published a weekly AMP Newsletter on Linked-In sharing asset management insights and observations related to facilities, built infrastructure, and beyond.  This included two miniseries:

  • Asset Management Foundational Thinking (19 articles):  this miniseries covered a 30+ year knowledge base for current asset management practice and theory.  This miniseries clearly showed that asset management is a dynamic and evolving discipline.

One could say that only the foundation for disciplined asset management has been placed and that we are just getting started with building its superstructure… such as an AM Framework.  This premise led into the second miniseries:

  • Asset Management (AM) Framework (23 articles): this miniseries introduced a framework for risk-informed resource and investment decision making that was first introduced over twenty years ago and is now a recognized leading best practice for asset portfolio renewal.

The Motivation for a Newsletter

My enthusiasm for the discipline of asset management originated with my experiences as a civil engineer, facility manager, and program manager in the US Coast Guard.  Here I learned the value of service, teamwork, engineering, planning, objectives, strategy, and follow-through.  My experiences in mission support delivery were numerous, positive and rewarding, but at the same time I became frustrated by limitations in the management system that enabled them. I believed more could be done, that there were better ways to manage assets and generate value.

Years later I was introduced to the ISO 55000 – Asset Management System standards series.  This was a light bulb moment for me.  ISO 55000 gave me a rubric to understand what an asset management system was and how one works.  Equipped with this insight I was able to channel past frustrations into positive energy and action. One of the products of this action is this newsletter. The objective and purpose of this newsletter is to share insights that can help other Asset Managers navigate through the challenges they face, that is to support their learning journey.

The Pathway Forward

I found the best way to accelerate value generation from assets was through a capable asset management system and an AM Framework to deliver it.  The framework covered in the miniseries highlighted above is a recognized best practice by the US National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine as covered in their report – Strategies to Renew Federal Facilities.

In the AM Framework miniseries, I introduced what I learned by using it.  The feedback I received from publishing the miniseries reinforced to me that there are many like me, Asset Managers, who are looking for better ways to do things.

Moving forward, the AMP Newsletter will be available on SubStack - you can subscribe at the link found at the bottom of the article. I will continue to post on LinkedIn to share asset management insights, but will move in-depth discussion to the SubStack AMP Newsletter.  Moving to SubStack provides a subscription model that gives me the opportunity to dedicate more time and energy to content development, plus it provides enhanced archive and chat capabilities.

What does being a Subscriber Give You?

As a subscriber you will get continued and archive access to leading asset management information, insights, innovations, and knowledge. This will help you be a successful Asset Management Change Agent at your organization or for your clients. The benefits realized align with asset management’s overall objective - that is to generate value for you and your organization.

What Types of Subscribers are there?

The AMP Newsletter will have free and paid subscription options as follows:

  • Free Subscribers – will receive posts on general information and updates.
  • Paid Subscribers – will receive weekly AMP Newsletters, access to the newsletter archive, and be able to chat with other subscribers.
  • AMP Partner – will receive weekly AMP Newsletters, monthly AM Framework Journal entries, and have access to both archives.

The AMP Newsletter Horizon

The Substack AMP Newsletter will build on the Linked-In newsletter foundation.  Each post will be a topic focused, 1–2-thousand-word letter helpful to development, implementation, and activation of asset management systems and solutions.  Topics will frequently be organized through a miniseries to support broader objectives, initiatives, and strategies.

Throughout, the content will provide in-depth discussions and analysis related to asset management mechanics, methods, and motivations.  Specific topics and questions to be addressed by the AMP Newsletter will include:

  • How do I explain the power and advantage of “management system thinking”?
  • How does talking about value generation translate into action?
  • What are the principles of disciplined asset management implementation?
  • How is asset management and organizational success linked?

General themes and subjects that will be covered by the AMP Newsletter are:

  • Asset Management Principles, Concepts, Knowledge, and Knowhow.
  • Change Management and Asset Management Culture Development.
  • Asset Management and Digital Transformation.
  • Asset Management Means, Methods, Metrics, and Analytics.

But Wait, There is More…

The AM Framework Journal will be available to subscribers at the AMP Partner level.  This journal will build on AMP Newsletter topics, themes, concepts, and approaches.  The journal’s purpose is to translate AMP Newsletter content (i.e. potential energy) into strategy, plans, and practice (i.e. kinetic energy).  The distinction between the two are the AMP Newsletter will focus on asset management system development and implementation, whereas the AM Framework Journal will focus on asset management activation.

What will the Free Subscription option include?

If the paid subscription route is more then you are ready for, don’t worry, I plan to provide content that will be available to all subscribers.  This content will not be released on a schedule. Although I do plan to make one to two free posts a month.

Content to be released in this capacity will highlight reports and sources related to asset management covering the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly.  I will also provide updates and overviews of ISO 55000 – Asset Management System and related standards.

There will be a lot to cover in the coming year. This will include updates and new standard releases including ISO 55000, ISO 55001, ISO 55010, ISO 55011, ISO 55012, and ISO 55013.  These resources, and particularly updates to the flagship ISO 55000 and ISO 55001 standards, will inject new energy and creativity into the asset management discipline.  This will lead to exciting developments and new capabilities that will be accelerated through new technologies and technology-enablement.

On to the new AMP Newsletter horizon

I thank you for following the AMP Newsletter on Linked-In. It was an exciting year and I greatly appreciate all the follows and feedback. Without that, this next step would not have happened. Moving forward, I hope you will continue to follow the AMP Newsletter at Substack. I look forward to continuing this learning journey with you.
