A New year - a new career? 5 tips helping you to take the leap with ease.
Along with the detox, the gym subscription, and the resolution to take up that course, is it the urge to make a significant and permanent change to your existing career?
So, first things first – what is it about your current job and life situation that makes you want to change? Is it your function, company or manager? Or is it the wish to improve your lifestyle and quality of life?
Or do you feel you need to make a career move, but lack of clarity and direction is holding you back? Perhaps, you realised that you are not the place where you want to be and you need guidance and support in finding your purpose and your new path?
Take advantage of the new year momentum to put words on your wishes and make a plan that would otherwise remain dormant, like finally making that career move you thought about for years.
Relaunching a career, a well defined step-by-step process is a must. Nobody should take a leap into a big black hole.
You need an accurate plan.
Here are 5 tips on how to change your career with ease, if a career move is on your new year’s resolution list:
⭐ The most basic foundation of getting the career most fitted for you is to gain clarity.
Understanding who you are, what you are good at, what you want and why you want a certain type of career are all important to get clear on you first. As well as being super clear on how you want to live your life and career, by all means as this will influence your overall well being.
Digging deeper into your inner dreams and visions of a better life, will be important in the realisation phase. By getting your dreams all clear to you, will increase the chances to get there.
Without putting words and pictures to your true deep wishes, nothing of that will ever happen. You will instead continue to work in the direction that you think is good, but not convinced about, without any deeper connection to your job, which in the end might lead to unhappiness and a feeling of emptiness, and regret…
With increased self-awareness you will instead become more confident, get more courage and have your own well defined life view grounded in your mind.
⭐ Your chances of long-term success are greater if you approach the change gradually!
I often hear my clients say they want to change everything - new country, new industry, new function – all at once, bam, new life! My advice to those considering a complete career transformation is: one thing at a time, and the chances to get there will improve significantly.
If you plan to go freelance or start your own business but without having secure financial support, start slowly on the side to then eventually decrease your other commitments. This to avoid getting into a desperate ‘’need to find clients’’ mode, as that easily shows in your energy towards potential clients.
⭐ Get clear on your skill set and upskill only the absolute necessary
Many people believe they need to take lots of courses, MBAs and even go back to school in order to make a career change, because they assume they need a completely new skill set. That is not always true.

In general we tend to over do this work and it often hinders us from moving forward.
There are certain skills that you will be able to use in many kinds of careers, such as communication, organisation, and leadership skills. They are gold worth and are more difficult to upskill, as we learn them mostly from experience and by doing.
Figure out exactly what kind of upskill is absolutely necessary to do, to fill in important skill gaps. Drawing the connection between your past experiences and the work you want to do and the skills you need to have, will help you create the perfect fit for the new career.
But remember, it’s more about the will than the skill.
⭐ To make a career change happen, you must not only be interested, but fully committed.
Many people are interested in changing their careers and it is easy to imagine working in a higher position or as an entrepreneur, with a higher raise. But, if you want your dreams to come true, a hundred percent commitment is needed.
Commitment requires not only a strong intention as a heart-led promise, but as well as developing a plan, and maintaining a sense of discipline in executing the plan. Staying focused on your plan is crucial; however, it's important to ensure you have realistic expectations of yourself and the outcome. If your commitment is not paying off after a certain period of time, you should adjust your method accordingly and revise any necessary steps to get closer to your goal.
⭐ If you want to do something great in your career - don’t be afraid of failure!
Many of us have probably experienced this at one time or another. The fear of failing can become your biggest block. It is our limiting beliefs and fears that cause us to do nothing, and therefore limit us moving forward. When we let fear take over our progress in life, we're likely to miss some great opportunities along the way.
Ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen? If something good doesn't turn out as we expected, at least you've dared to try and next time you are one experience richer. All big entrepreneurs are failing, all the time. It is more about learning how to deal with failure and how to grow from it that becomes important, to adjust quickly and to never lose focus on your end goal.
Many people live in fear and are therefore stuck in a career that is not truly theirs, even though they know they are made for more and have potential to do much more.
Unfortunately we are often blocked and limited in life and at work for different reasons, but don't let these blocks hinder you from living your precious life to the fullest.
Everyone deserves to be in control of their career, live their life on their terms and find something that is truly meaningful.
Everyone deserves to leave a legacy behind that one can be proud of and to find a career that one feels truly passionate about.
