Are Newsletters a Good Idea? | LinkedIn Updates and Changes | Tips, Events and more
In the past month, we have set up three newsletters here on LinkedIn, utilising the platform’s newest publishing format. This experiment has been interesting, not least because – let’s be honest, newsletters aren’t exactly new or exciting.
This makes their popularity on LinkedIn somewhat surprising. More on than in a moment.
Before I was given access to newsletters I’d seen other people’s newsletters with big subscriber numbers. I assumed that was because they had large networks. Now, I’m not sure if it might not be we, the members, driving it. After all, the algorithm can only do so much to persuade us to get on board with new formats. With newsletters we vote with the subscribe button.
Let me share our results in publishing newsletters.
This newsletter, published for the first time on March 17 (4 weeks ago), has garnered slightly greater than a 26% subscriber rate, keeping in mind that the first issue is sent to all connections. Some of these subscribers may be people who follow but are not connected to me so while it’s not an entirely accurate measurement, it is indicative.
Our Link∙Ability company page newsletter was published for the first time on April 4, just over two weeks ago, and has so far also been subscribed to by 26% of the page’s followers.
Two weeks ago we published the first company page newsletter for a client which has gained a nearly 21% subscriber rate. We expect this to increase over the next 2-3 weeks.
Published newsletters are stored in the same tab as articles on profiles and pages but they may get their own tab in due course which will make them more visible. However, if a newsletter is published from a personal profile, as is this one, it can be pinned to the Featured section.
This proximity to articles may explain why we’re seeing many newsletters being written as if they were articles, instead of a format usually associated with newsletters. Usually this is made up of several shortish articles, plus news items, promos and company news.
However, it seems many people are using the reach of the newsletter format to get their articles more widely seen. And that certainly seems to be the case. Comparisons of the newsletters mentioned above show that this newsletter received 3754 impressions whereas the previous article a month before scored 1569. However, the impression or view number of newsletters from company pages doesn’t seem to be available or wasn’t when I was writing this.
Bearing all this in mind, and given that it is early days, it seems that newsletters have taken off. The proof will be in subsequent issues, however. But if you have the resources or already publish a newsletter elsewhere, then adding it to your LinkedIn content marketing makes great sense.
New from LinkedIn in the last month
💠 Live captions will display on audio events. (This already occurs for LinkedIn lives which are video-based.)
💠 Improvements may finally be coming to Groups with a pop-up displaying after you publish a post inviting you to share it in a group you belong to.
💠 Lead generation forms are being added to product pages on company pages.
💠 Employees will be able to invite connections to follow the company page without being an admin.
💠 Company page super or content admins can comment directly on any post as their company rather than as themselves.
💠 A new Workplace module allows page admins to display established workplace policies on the About page.
💠 Someone who invites you to connect automatically becomes a follower, whether or not you accept their invitation.
These are just the changes announced or have begun roll out in March and early April. There is a longer list of earlier 2022 changes in our last newsletter: https://bit.ly/3E5tmWc

2yLynnaire Johnston - thank you so much Lynnaire, loved your newsletter set up. 😘 The intro of this great feature has been overused. For example - due to my volume of daily mentoring emails, newsletters are almost lost in my mail box. No chance that I can give it a deserving respect of reading, even though knowing how much work a person puts in. Therefore, I personally didn't activate this feature. The rest of them will be activated, per my to do list. I still have to look at the replay noted above. At present, I am on a computer detox inclusive of Easter long weekend. However, made an exception today to say hello. Appreciate your wisdom and expertise in the content. Bravo! 👏 😍

2yThanks Lynnaire, some really interesting numbers there and I guess the major question is what the average contrition rate turns out to be over a longer period of time - look forward to that post, but certainly a positive start for your newsletters! Also, thanks for highlighting some other recently launched features. I'd seen the info on the company page lead information form (which I've since set up), but I wasn't aware that anyone who invites you to connect now automatically becomes a follower, regardless of whether you accept their invitation or not; that's an intriguing one.

2yI've been sitting on the fence with newsletters but I am now posting at least two articles a week. LinkedIn keeps asking me if I would like to turn these into articles but I don't want to bombard folk
