The Next Twenty Years of Sharing: Addgene’s Journey

When I became the executive director of Addgene two years ago, I often heard: what drew you to Addgene? As an academically trained scientist who has supported scientists throughout my career and in different settings around the world, I understand both the enablers of, and blockers to, scientific discovery and innovation. So my answer was and still is: because I believe that sharing science is necessary for scientific progress.

A Vision Ahead of Its Time

Addgene was founded twenty years ago when the concept of open science was still taking shape. This happened alongside the emergence of the open access movement, before funding agencies mandated open access and data sharing policies, and before the open science movement achieved the momentum it has today. Addgene’s founders had a bold vision: scientific discoveries and innovation can be accelerated by helping scientists share research materials and information worldwide. 

Thanks to the thousands of scientists and their institutions who have entrusted their innovations to Addgene, Addgene is among the world’s largest repositories with nearly 150,000 biological research materials. These include a range of materials — plasmids, viral vectors, and antibodies — used in multiple ways to drive significant advancements in the life sciences. 

Catalysts for Innovation

Take CRISPR, for instance. When CRISPR technology emerged in 2012, its pioneers deposited their tools with Addgene (Pyhtila et al., 2023). This enabled rapid global adoption and modification of CRISPR, spurring a multitude of gene-editing applications. Today, our repository holds nearly 18,000 CRISPR plasmids, and we've distributed just under 300,000 CRISPR plasmids, along with 12,000 CRISPR libraries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the infrastructure and processes that we had in place to enable sharing were instrumental in the research response to COVID-19 (“Open for Outbreaks,” 2020). COVID-19 plasmids were made available within days of being deposited, facilitating immediate research use. Our repository now includes over 3,000 COVID-related materials, underscoring the critical role of scientific sharing to benefit society in tangible ways. 

The Next Twenty Years

For the last two decades, Addgene has distributed materials that are fundamental to life sciences research. Our value comes not just from our repository, but from the extra steps we take to ensure materials are useful to the scientific community, from our robust quality control processes to our trustworthy educational resources, to our exceptional customer and scientific support. 

Today Addgene stands poised to build on twenty years of success, committed to continuously growing our support of the scientific community. We envision a globally connected scientific community, collaborating and sharing seamlessly to achieve unparalleled discoveries in pursuit of a healthy, equitable, and sustainable world for everyone. We believe this vision can be achieved via a strengthened global scientific ecosystem, supported by a diverse community of scientific leaders, and transformed by open science practices. 

Having consulted with a number of stakeholders in the life sciences — including scientists, research institutions, technologists, funders, policymakers, and thought leaders — here are the ways in which Addgene will contribute to this vision over the next twenty years.

First, we will improve the repository for the sharing and use of materials, tools, services, and resources.  An average 191,286 distributions per year attests to the value of the repository for life sciences research. Technologies available today enable different approaches to sharing that are in alignment with the innovative approaches adopted by Addgene twenty years ago. For this reason, we are updating, expanding, and improving our processes and user interface, while also applying technology in different ways to provide an improved service to all global users. For example, Addgene’s recent website update was designed to improve user experience and accessibility, while gathering valuable feedback to improve our services.  

Second, we will expand our range of materials, tools, and services to support a wider range of disciplines and stakeholders. Addgene has a global network of institutions, laboratories, depositors, contributors, requesters, and collaborators that allow us to stay abreast of scientific developments across highly varied fields, and learn of the newest innovations and technologies that drive scientific discovery, often before they are made available to the broader community. We will grow our collections, networks, and partnerships to bring our repository and services to a wider range of disciplines and sectors in both academia and industry for research purposes. We will also seek to build new relationships with, and learn from, emerging research communities to understand how our materials, services, and educational resources can be improved to better serve the needs of a diverse global community. 

Third, we will share our knowledge, experience, and community connections to influence the global agenda towards better open science practices, supported by science policy, infrastructure, and funding contributed by other stakeholders in the scientific ecosystem. Over the years, we have enriched our understanding of the benefits and best practices of scientific sharing. We will continue to strengthen the scientific sharing ecosystem by expanding our collaborations with like-minded organizations to openly share more tools for research. A recent example is our collaboration with the Institute for Protein Innovation, who has deposited their new integrin antibodies with us to distribute. Together, we have engaged in an iterative process to understand and implement antibody validation standards, culminating in the launch of Addgene’s Antibody Data Hub and supported by our growing collection of antibody educational resources.
