NGO (Non-Governmental Organisations) and Non-Profit’s are a great way to get some early board experience. However, whilst it’s better than nothing, it does not carry as much weight in the commercial sector.
Remember, companies are looking for someone to join the board that can add commercial value. And that means you need to understand how not just how the commercial sector works, but how you can work it to create value. If you have experience of delivering value on a startup or small company board, that is likely to be more attractive to other companies.
