The NHS: Reimagining Industry Partnerships
The NHS stands at a juncture, grappling with the dual pressures of soaring demand and limited resources. I believe that a part of the solution to this must be a review of the relationships it builds with potential industry partners. While traditional collaborations have yielded some benefits, they are inadequate to the challenges we face. A new approach is needed, one that prioritises value creation and shared responsibility for innovation.
Historically, industry partnerships have often overlooked the NHS’s substantial contributions. Clinical expertise, vast data repositories, and world-class infrastructure represent a goldmine for industry partners. Yet, all too often, these partners arrive flush with venture capital and gleaming new technologies, expecting to exploit our resources without offering fair compensation. This lopsided dynamic hinders the NHS’s ability to maximise the benefits of such collaborations, ultimately jeopardising healthcare quality and efficiency. To rectify this imbalance, I believe we must adopt a strategy centred on value exchange and shared risk. Industry partners must acknowledge and compensate the NHS for the immense value it brings to the table.
The NHS's extensive health data is pivotal for research and development. Offering data services under stringent ethical and privacy standards can create a new revenue stream while driving medical science forward. Joint ventures with industry partners allow the NHS to co-own innovations and share in their financial successes, fostering commitment and aligning interests towards shared goals.
Sharing research and development costs ensures that neither the NHS nor its partners bear the financial burden alone, enabling ambitious projects that might otherwise be unattainable. Developing financial models where both parties invest in and benefit from innovations guarantees that the NHS is not left to shoulder the costs alone, promoting sustainable and equitable partnerships.
Implementing clear accountability frameworks will ensure all parties adhere to ethical and clinical standards, maintaining public trust and the integrity of partnerships. Continuous reporting on partnership activities and outcomes will enable progress monitoring and issue resolution, enhancing the effectiveness and reliability of collaborations.

Establishing clear value exchange models and sharing the burden of risk and reward will foster a collaborative environment. Industry partners can gain invaluable insights from the NHS’s clinical expertise, guiding the development of more effective solutions. No longer do we want to see tech for tech sake or solutions looking for a problem.
Monetising NHS expertise and data can significantly bolster its financial health. These income streams are not mere short-term fixes but can evolve into recurring revenue sources, providing sustained financial support. Building financial stability will enable the NHS to reinvest in its infrastructure, enhance patient care, and support further innovation. In these challenging times, this approach offers a lifeline, transforming how we fund our operations and build for the future.
The NHS must stand firm and demand fair play from industry partners. Industry must cease expecting to access NHS data and expertise for free. We are free at the point of delivery for patients, not for everyone that wants to build a business in this sector. The traditional model of industry engagement is outdated and must be overhauled. By monetising its assets, establishing value-based partnerships, and sharing the burden of risk and reward, the NHS can lead healthcare innovation. This model of partnership will empower the NHS to deliver better patient care and achieve healthcare outcomes we all deserve.

4moGood opinion piece Alexander Giles. Innovation is best as a team sport and for that to be successful and sustainable it has to be a team sport where all partners get a positive outcome and there is a value exchange amongst all participants. As one of my old bosses at Microsoft used to say "success is when all boats rise!"
