Non-Profit Expertise: Insights from Raymond Godeke of The California Scottish Rite Foundation on Critical Mass Radio Show

The California Scottish Rite Foundation is dedicated to supporting and assisting children in California reach their full potential. They do so by providing childhood language services, scholarships, and other charitable programs. Raymond Godeke joined us to discuss the importance of prevention and treatment of childhood language disorders. Here are three takeaways from our time with Raymond Godeke on Critical Mass Radio Show:

1. No one accomplishes great things alone.  Embrace your team members, mentors, and anyone around you who can provide insight to help you and your organization grow and develop. While on the show, Raymond Godeke said that when you are willing to listen to your counterparts, and are willing to invest in others and help them develop, you can achieve so much more. With that, it is important to ensure that your organization provides an environment in which people are encouraged to learn from each other and develop as a result.

2. Run your charity like a business. It is one. A common misconception about non-profit organizations is that they are in a completely separate category from corporations/for-profit businesses, however this is not the case. Just as in any business, a non-profit organization needs a business/action plan to achieve its objectives and accomplish its goals. Raymond Godeke added that non-profit organizations face many of the same challenges as for-profit businesses do, both financially and organizationally. Regardless of seemingly different organizational structures, any business, regardless of its type, needs an effective structure and implementation in order to be successful.

3. In a non-profit, know who your client is.  With non-profits, it can be difficult to

identify who you are truly targeting in your efforts: the segment of the population that

your organization seeks to serve, or the donors, individuals, etc, who are helping provide the resources and monetary funds that your organization needs to be able to make the difference. The truth is that those who enable you to deliver the service are in fact your clients; do not underestimate the importance of reaching this segment of your audience effectively.
