North East Professional Exchange Now Launched - Professional Development for Teachers, Trainers & Assessors
The North East Region Professional Exchange is part of a pilot, funded by the Education and Training Foundation to develop different teacher led approaches to self-development and training. The pilot will run for the academic year 2015 – 16.
The Professional Exchange will be:
- formed of a range of networks for teaching staff and will support development of a range of skills, pedagogic practice and technical ability through sharing of each other’s practice, as well as input from external experts on key topics
- accessible for all North East organisations and teaching staff, i.e. teachers, trainers, assessors, quality managers, involved in delivering EFA and SFA funded programmes
- focussed on local needs, particularly the needs of Professional Exchange members, as well as delivering national priority work
- based around individuals and organisations contributing equitably to its success
- managed in a fair and transparent way on behalf of its members
- fully funded – no direct costs for organisations and individuals to get involved
For organisations - Get Involved
Through becoming involved North East Professional Exchange organisations will benefit from:
- a positive contribution to quality and better outcomes for their learners, through self-development and training activity being focussed on key issues, challenges and opportunities facing their teaching staff
- a low cost, high value method for investing in their people and their Professional Development, which demonstrates their organisations commitment to their people and to quality
- an enhanced reputation with key sector stakeholders, including Ofsted, through recognition of commitment to driving quality and professional standards within their organisation
- recognition of demonstrating strong partnership working, through supporting the development and well-being of the wider sector
- access to knowledge, skills and resources from other organisations and key sector experts
We believe that the support and recognition of education, employment and skills organisations in regard to the role that the Exchange will play in improving professional practice, is crucial to its success. Many of the recent changes, challenges and opportunities within Further Education, Employment and Skills, such as;
- Area Based Reviews
- Apprenticeship Reform/Levy
- reducing/re-focussed budgets and an increased emphasis on ‘economic impact’
- changes to English and maths requirements
- Study Programmes and Traineeships
have meant that it has become increasingly challenging for organisations to manage the diverse professional development needs of their teaching staff. Therefore, whilst the Professional Exchange is teacher-led and focussed on improving professional practice, all of the activity will be firmly grounded in current policy and market changes, to ensure that it also appropriately supports member organisations.
For individuals - Get Involved
Rapid changes within Further Education, Employment and Skills mean that teaching staff are being presented with a raft of new challenges. Whilst the pace of change can be daunting, change often brings about new opportunities too.
Therefore the North East Professional Exchange will seek to strike the right balance of supporting members to manage the changes and challenges, whilst exploring new ideas and approaches to delivering excellence in professional practice.
Through becoming involved North East Professional Exchange individuals will benefit from:
- professional development opportunities that are designed, developed and delivered based on individual and local needs
- being able to demonstrate their commitment to their own professional standards and development, which will support career progression
- recognition from the Education and Training Foundation, their peers and their own organisation for their contribution to raising standards of practice in the sector
- access to the latest thinking and practice
- networking, support and sharing opportunities with peers
- access to high quality, shared materials and resources
All individual members of the Exchange will be involved in actively participating in the self-development and training activity. However, within this, there are three different types of involvement:
- Champion – This will involve an individual playing a lead role in the design, development and, or delivery of a self-development/training activity, based around their particular area of knowledge/expertise. Champions will have access to support from the Professional Exchange Team to ensure that they are equipped to prepare and deliver high quality sessions.
- Supporter – This will involve an individual making a significant contribution to the design, development and, or delivery a self-development/training activity. For example, delivering a short presentation within a broader session.
- Participant – Relates to all individuals who are actively involved in any self-development/ training activity available through the Exchange.
This approach helps to ensure that all teaching staff can contribute in a way that suits their experience, expertise, availability and aspirations.
All contributions to the Professional Exchange will be captured, shared and recognised by the Professional Exchange Team.
Get involved
There are no direct costs for individuals or organisations to become members of the North East Professional Exchange. Although, there is of course a time commitment. All self-development and training activity is essentially fully funded and, or supported by members of the Professional Exchange.
Members will be required to sign-up to the Professional Exchange Membership Charter, which outlines roles, responsibilities and expectations of those involved, and also includes what support you can expect from the Professional Exchange Team.

Meet the Team
Employment and Skills Innovation Services was born from the strong and simple belief that the Employment and Skills market could and should be better.
- Better for individuals accessing programmes and services
- Better for employers accessing services for their current and future workforce
- Better for the economy, through the Education, Employment and Skills market delivering a greater return for every pound invested by government, business and individuals
We believe that innovation is central to realising these improvements, which is why we created Employment and Skills Innovation Services.
We’re proud to be partnering with the Education and Training Foundation in the delivery of the North East Professional Exchange, as we believe that the best ideas in business come from those at the frontline of delivering to customers (or learners, as we call them).
We also believe that the biggest changes and improvements are realised through collaboration. These two factors will be central to everything that we achieve through the North East Professional Exchange.
