Nostalgia and Flavor: Exploring Greasy Spoons During My Travels
Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a Negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyway. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.

I have long intended to pen an article for LinkedIn but wanted it to be light and fun.
With this topic, I may absorb criticism from LinkedIn's "business-only purists," but my contention is that you have to eat when traveling for business, so it is better to know about these spots. Apologies for the East Coast bias, but we tend to write about what we know.
Traveling offers a unique opportunity to explore local culinary gems, especially those unassuming "greasy spoon" establishments that serve as the heart and soul of their communities. These eateries not only provide delicious comfort food but also evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection to the past. Plus, if the outside presents a foreboding feeling, all the better, right?
Reflecting on my journeys, particularly along the East Coast, mostly visiting my parents back at home in Connecticut, and in years past for my children's sports, several such spots stand out for their memorable experiences and offer delectable offerings.
Here are a few of my favorites from years of travel, each offering a taste of nostalgia and comfort — please share one of your own favorite travel food stops in the comments.
Merritt Canteen — Bridgeport, CT
Established in 1942, Merritt Canteen has been a staple in Bridgeport, Connecticut, delighting patrons with its classic American fare. Known for its hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, and seafood, the Canteen has expanded its menu to include bison burgers, sweet potato fries, and renowned chili and clam chowder. 1
Heck, it made “Diners, Driven-Ins, and Dives.” If Guy Fieri ate there, it can’t be all bad. Great haunt after a night of bar hopping—not that I would know. On a recent Connecticut trip, I took my dad there. He suggested it was his first time — Challenge! I strongly recommend the 1/3lb Bacon & Egg Burger. Chris Bogannam Jonathan Gorton
Cricket Car Hop — Stratford, CT
After a 14-year hiatus, Cricket Car Hop made its return to Stratford, Connecticut. Famous for its "Cricket Long Dog" topped with signature hot sauce and red relish on a toasted New England-style roll, this establishment offers a nostalgic dining experience. Guests can enjoy their meals on an outdoor patio or opt for convenient online ordering with car-side pickup. 2
I remembered enjoying the original establishment as a kid with my parents, so on the most recent Connecticut trip I had to check out its triumphant return. Plus, I was a Stratford Jet, back in the Pop Warner days when I could hit like a runaway freight train. Mark A. Petrino
Stratford, Stratford, who are they? The best team in the USA!
Locust Point Steamers (L.P. Steamers) — Baltimore, MD
The most fun with a wooden mallet since "The Shining."
In Baltimore, Locust Point Steamers stands out for its commitment to fresh, in-house prepared seafood, particularly Maryland's finest crabs. Open year-round, the restaurant features a third-story rooftop deck overlooking the harbor, providing a picturesque dining setting. Specials like Fried Hard Crabs and discounted oysters on Tuesdays, along with half-priced steamed shrimp and $2 Natty Boh drafts on Wednesdays, add to its appeal. 3
The father of one of my daughter’s lacrosse teammates told me about L.P. Steamers. The food is impressive and hammering the Fried Hard Crabs with a wooden mallet is always a blast (warning: do not get their seasoning in the eyes).
The restaurant-referring-parent told me that after eating there he discarded his clothing in the trash — I hope he waited until he arrived back at the hotel, but no matter, the food is worth the sacrifice. I was too frugal to toss my duds.
Jim's South St. Steaks & Hoagies — Philadelphia, PA
A Philadelphia institution, Jim's South St. is renowned for its world-famous cheesesteaks. Recognized by TripAdvisor in 2021 as "Best of the Best," Jim's offers a quintessential Philly dining experience. 4

Big juicy cheesesteaks, what else is there to say? It might be cash only (someone keep me honest). Robert Russin Andrew Spivack
Lou's Sandwich Shop — Norristown, PA
Lou's Sandwich Shop in Norristown, Pennsylvania, is a cherished eatery known for its hearty sandwiches and welcoming atmosphere. Its reputation among locals speaks volumes about its quality and the sense of community it fosters. 5
I will never forget the look on my mother’s face when we pulled into the rear parking lot of this establishment (see this article's header). Yet, somehow, I was able to persuade her to go inside. I thought the food and atmosphere were excellent — not sure my Mother shared the sentiment.
Fresh Fresh Seafood — Towson, MD
"We have a baked potato."
In Towson, Maryland, Fresh Fresh Seafood lives up to its name by offering a variety of seafood dishes made to order. The menu features items like fried shrimp, clam strips, and a selection of fish platters, all served with sides such as asparagus, coleslaw, and homemade mac-n-cheese. The establishment prides itself on its fresh ingredients and personalized service, making it a must-visit for seafood enthusiasts. 6
I did not stutter. The food is so fresh, they had to say it twice. When I went, there was no menu. The server had the food inventory written on scrap paper.
She said, “We have a baked potato,” and that is precisely what she meant. There was only one baked potato available, but it was fresh!
I found Fresh Fresh by searching Yelp and when I called asking if they could seat four in the next hour, they said, “We can seat twelve.” Upon arrival, we realized the entire restaurant only accommodated twelve.
Each of these establishments holds a special place in my heart, not only for their delectable offerings but also for the memories they have helped create during my travels.
These local treasures serve as reminders that sometimes, the most unassuming spots can provide the most memorable dining experiences.
Explore and enjoy. Have a Negroni. Have two.
