Notes on a journey toward decarbonisation
The paper industry is an energy-intensive one and a sector that, in its current state, heavily relies on gas as an energy source. Reducing the dependency on gas and fossil fuels is increasingly paramount: in such a context, Burgo Group is taking advantage of a strategy that has long since moved in the direction of carbon neutrality and diversification of energy sources.
The leading role of Burgo Energia
Burgo Energia is the Energy Service Company that manages the energy system and operations of the Burgo Group. As such, it pursues vital energy efficiency goals at the Group's sites: the reduction in consumption leads to a decrease in gas needs and therefore a reduction in CO2 emissions and energy costs.
"Burgo Energia always remains true to its main goal: to accompany Burgo Group towards energy optimisation. We are working towards an increasingly advanced efficiency, to achieve decarbonisation according to the European Green Deal targets. This is the real energy goal and also a great challenge, especially when you consider our size."
Luca Sassoli, CEO of Burgo Energia
Mapping a sustainable transition
Technological advances and the shift towards a sustainable transition have provided the Group with challenging tests while working towards decarbonisation and the goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030.
"One of the essential development drivers of the Group will be the ecological transition process. I am talking in particular about the efficient use of energy resources and the increasing use of renewable energy sources."
Marco Tagliapietra, Chief Financial Officer of Burgo Group.
Burgo Group has made significant investments in the efficiency of its plants and processes. The strategy for the green transition is integrated with different innovation measures: some are already in the pipeline, while others are in the long term. Here are some of the projects underway:
The first carbon-neutral plant
Burgo Ardennes, in Belgium, is set to become the first Burgo Group site at net-zero emission.

"We are building a green factory, which will be carbon neutral within three or four years and energy self-sufficient. That means that it will no longer use fossil fuels. It will no longer burn gas, it will produce thermal energy from cellulose processing and, with a new twelve-megawatt photovoltaic park, will no longer buy electricity, also thanks to the use of biomass from wood."
Ignazio Capuano, CEO of Burgo Group
The Group is also working on reducing gas consumption and the consequent emission of CO2 in all the paper mills.
Photovoltaic and cogeneration systems
In the longer term, the Group aims to power all its production units with eco-friendly fuels and to emancipate itself from the use of gas.
Meanwhile, the construction of photovoltaic systems for a total of 40 megawatts is currently underway, alongside the renewal project of the cogeneration plant in Tolmezzo. Cogeneration plants allow the combined production of electricity and heat using the same primary energy: this leads to significant energy savings, with consequent reduction of energy costs and reduction of air and thermal pollution.
Sustainability across processes and products
Companies such as Burgo Group can indeed have a vital role in the ecological transition process.
Moreover, the input that the paper industry can give to the cause of carbon neutrality does not stem only from the reduction of the impact of the production stage. Paper represents an alternative material to fossil-based plastic, in particular through the recently developed papers that are produced from natural and recyclable fibres: paper-based products and packaging that may replace the use of plastics, even in the food industry.
