Notes to Self: Finding a Sense of Awe

Notes to Self: Finding a Sense of Awe

When was the last time you felt a sense of awe? You know, that feeling of being completely enveloped by the beauty and wonder of the moment? For me, the surefire way to find awe is in nature. There are so many opportunities during sunrises, sunsets, or like the other day when a merganser popped up beside my paddleboard and kept paddling right beside me as the sun painted the clouds a dazzling pink. It's a truly awesome feeling.

Working with people that are dying via Give A Mile has enhanced my sense of awe.  Understanding that our time is finite helps us to appreciate the present moment more deeply. We have been given a limited time in this life.  All this incredible life experiences have an ending.  That in itself feels awe inducing, a universe that is vast and infinite and yet here we are looking at a sunset, having an ice cream, being with our loved ones. When we realize that every experience is unique and fleeting, we start to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.  This perspective shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundant beauty around us.

Why Awe Matters:

  • Boosts Creativity: Awe-inspiring experiences spark imagination and open our minds to new possibilities.
  • Enhances Well-Being: Research shows that experiencing awe can reduce stress and increase overall life satisfaction.
  • Fosters Connection: Sharing moments of awe with others strengthens relationships and builds a sense of community.

How to Cultivate Awe:

  1. Nature: Spend time in nature. Observe the beauty of nature, the vastness of the sky, or the serenity of a flowing river.
  2. Stargazing: Look up at the night sky. The sheer vastness and beauty of the cosmos can be profoundly humbling.
  3. Art: An amazing song, a book that hits us in the feels. Let the creativity and talent of others inspire and move you.
  4. Mindfulness Practices: Engage in mindfulness or meditation to become more present and open to the wonders around you.
  5. Explore: Step out of your comfort zone. Travel to new places, whether it's a different country or a nearby town you’ve never visited.

Coming to terms with our impermanence fosters a deep sense of gratitude and awe for the moments we might otherwise overlook.

As we navigate our busy lives, making a conscious effort to seek out and savor these awe-inspiring moments is an important part of our mental wellbeing. They remind us of the beauty and wonder of the world, helping us to live more deliberate and fulfilling lives.

Good one Kevin Crowe - I remember on our epic paddle board to Medicine Hat near the last day, we found a camping spot under this unbelievable tree.....a great moment of awe!
