November 2023: Forecasting Better Technology Ahead

Advancements in AAM Weather Standards and Technologies Shaping the Future of Aviation

The AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) Industry is witnessing many visionary companies taking a proactive stance for safety, long-term cost savings and efficiency, setting the stage for future growth. Some technologies include Detect and Avoid (DAA) Systems, Advanced Navigation Systems, Urban Air Traffic Management (UTM)Systems and Weather Monitoring and Prediction Tools, to name a few. It takes forward-thinking strategies, like these, for an industry undergoing rapid evolution to be sustainable.

On the weather front, we have been in step with the collaborative efforts of the FAA and ASTM within the F38 Weather Standards. On November 8th, 2023 the ASTM F38 Committee approved a new weather standard framework. An overview of the new standard is found in this month’s feature article, A New Weather Standard for Uncrewed and eVTOL Operations: The Foundation for the Future of Aviation Weather. The newly established weather standard brings forth measures with immediate benefits while also laying the groundwork to mitigate risks and foster adaptive management in the context of climate considerations.

Also in November, NASA held The AAM Weather Technical Interchange Meeting in Washington, DC. The meeting covered all facets of the AAM weather sphere:

  • The production of the regulatory standards and framework.
  • The ongoing support of operational testbeds and case studies.
  • Ongoing research and development.

TruWeather had the opportunity to participate in five presentations and is proud to collaborate with all the stakeholders who are dedicated to making the AAM weather system better.

In many ways, the weather aspect of the AAM industry is solving a puzzle, with individual pieces representing the work done by a multitude of contributors. The FAA and NASA play a crucial role in identifying these puzzle pieces, each necessitating dedicated research and development. More importantly, they empower the industry to formulate solutions organically through a foundation built on innovation, collaboration, and research right from the inception.
