Nurturing talent, the Jim Sullivan way
Competition for talent will remain the top concern for hospitality companies in 2020. So what are the best strategies for engaging, retaining and motivating your teams? And who to turn to for dependable advice?
One man with the proven track record for providing answers to those perennial questions is the legendary leadership guru Jim Sullivan is returning to the UK next spring to deliver his unique London Leadership Masterclass.
The much anticipated event will be held in the auditorium at 30 Euston Square on Wednesday April 29, 2020.
Jim’s 2020 return booking follows the success of his 2019 London Masterclass, which saw both senior executives and front-line teams from 30 plus companies from across the UK hospitality sector spend a day learning the top techniques for building success and delivering exceptional service experiences.
Those represented included leading operators such as Mitchells & Butlers, Loungers, The Alchemist, New World Trading, Caravan, Brewdog, Hawksmoor, Las Iguanas, Hippo Inns, Deltic, YO! Sushi, Boxpark and Ivy Collection, as well as still young concepts like Pizza Pilgrims, Rosa’s Thai and Corazon.
“What they all had in common was the ambition and dedication to keep improving their business operations – and no-one has a better reputation in global hospitality for nurturing and enthusing tomorrow’s leaders, helping them to develop their own talent and that of their teams than Jim Sullivan,” said industry veteran Peter Martin, who ran this year’s Masterclass and is organizing next year’s too.

Peter Martin is co-producing the one-off event through his boutique consultancy CM&Co, and working closely with industry icon Ian Neill, the former boss of Wagamama and now chair of K10, who’s supporting and co-producing the project. CGA, the market’s leading data and insight specialist, and Harri, the on-line people platform, are partnering the event.
More than 250 paying delegates are expected for what will be a high-level training day. Typically, participants range from CEOs to COOs, operations directors and regional managers to company founders to people and recruitment teams to trainers and the most talented high-flying GMs.
“There was a three year gap between Jim’s last London Masterclass and the 2019 event, but the reaction to his return this year leaves us in no doubt about his continued popularity and relevance this side of the Atlantic. So don’t miss out,” added Peter Martin.

4yLabour is going to be a major headache in 2020. Staff shortages continue to blight the hospitality sector, and how to attract, retain, engage and motivate the best people is not going to get any easier. Even investors are now putting people at the top of board agendas ahead of property. So what techniques should you deploy? To find out, my advise would be to get your future leaders booked onto Jim Sullivan's London Masterclass right now.
