🏪 Meta Tests Fashion and Function with New Ray-Ban Smartglasses Pop-up Store
Meta opens its first pop-up store in Los Angeles, showcasing Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses in a high-traffic “experiential retail” setting until December 31st.
These smartglasses resemble classic Ray-Ban designs but include advanced features such as cameras, speakers, and onboard AI powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 processor.
This store offers customers hands-on experiences, including the option to try on smartglasses, capture media, and purchase customized pairs.
Events are scheduled at the store, such as comedy shows and workshops, aiming to drive word-of-mouth marketing and build a community around the product.
After LA, Meta will open another pop-up in Phoenix in January, with plans to test various retail models and potentially scale based on insights gathered in collaboration with eyewear partner EssilorLuxottica.
Meta released a preview of the operating system interface for its Orion AR prototype, developed for future AR glasses expected around 2027.
Unlike Meta’s Quest devices running on Horizon OS, Orion’s OS is designed for a smaller field of view, less computing power, and outdoor usability—akin to the difference between iOS for iPhone and watchOS for Apple Watch.
The video reveals several app launcher designs, indicating that Meta is still experimenting with user interface options for optimal usability.
Orion requires a streamlined interface due to limited hardware capacity. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth describes Orion's processing power as closer to early gaming devices like the Game Boy Advance rather than high-end VR.
With Orion serving as a prototype, Meta aims to refine this AR-focused OS to create a practical, user-friendly interface in preparation for its consumer release in the coming years.
🥽 Apple Pushes Affordable Vision Pro to Post-2027, Plans M5 Chip Upgrade Instead
Apple’s rumored, budget-friendly Vision Pro model is now pushed back to "beyond 2027," extending the wait for a consumer-oriented headset option.
Apple will reportedly focus on a Vision Pro refresh for 2025, featuring the new M5 processor, enhancing performance but likely keeping its high price point.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests Apple is focusing on refining use cases and features rather than simply lowering prices, likening this approach to its smart speaker strategy with HomePod.
This delay counters earlier reports of a cheaper "Vision SE" model expected in 2025, hinting at an evolving roadmap for Apple’s XR strategy.
As Meta and Google advance their mixed reality platforms, Apple’s delayed affordable option could impact its competitive positioning in the XR market.
