National Long-Term Care Awareness Month

National Long-Term Care Awareness Month is observed every year in November in the US.

Did you know...

...that 70% of men and women over age 65 will need long-term care services?

This kind of care can be expensive and will take a toll on the family as a whole as they try to figure out:

  • payment of the facility, continued healthcare and prescription drugs,
  • roles of family members,
  • the anxiety of the family,

...and other logistics of making long-term decisions for a loved one.

When providing care for someone long term, it usually means feeding them, helping with personal care, bathing them, and helping with other daily tasks.

Here is a list of statistics surrounding long-term care in the United States.

  • 78% of adults who are getting long-term care at home rely solely on family and friends for their assistance
  • Alzheimer's disease is the largest contributor to people needing long-term care.
  • The average caregiver is a woman around 46 years of age.
  • On average, the caregiver spends about 21 hours per week assisting their patient or family member.
  • Over 90% of family caregivers had to alter their work schedule permanently due to caring for their loved ones.
  • Around 40% of caregivers have switched from working full-time to part-time.
  • Close to half said they had to skip vacation and other personal activities to take adequate care of their loved ones.
  • 29% had to use their own money to provide care.
  • More than 10% had to move to be closer to their family member in need of care.
  • Around 10% had to take a pay cut at their full-time job.
  • Only 7.5 million Americans have long-term care insurance, which is only 2.2% of the entire U.S. population.

What can you do today?

Show that you love the elderly. Compassion and empathy will never grow old. Everyone loves grandparents! Treat the elderly just like you would want someone to treat your parents or grandparents.

Raise awareness about long-term care and acknowledge anyone you know serving as a caregiver. The more we understand the emotional, physical, and economic toll that long-term care can take on loved ones, the more we can prepare for our own future. None of us want to become a burden to the people we love the most.

Prepare your family by looking into getting long-term care insurance. Rather than having a family member come and take care of you, a nurse would come to take care of you every day. If you do not have insurance, you will likely pay around $140,000 out of pocket on average. Remember, the elderly have a 20-year life expectancy after they reach age 65.

  • Potential cost of care
  • For assistance in determining the potential cost of care, consider using the Cost of Alzheimer’s Care Calculator from Georgetown University. This powerful calculator can help you understand the out-of-pocket costs associated with providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

In Celebration of Random Acts of Appreciation

Thank you, Rashawn Copeland for posting this from David Nurse

So I'm at the mall and a little boy comes into CHAMPS — asking about basketball shoes and if they have any under $75. The worker said no and the little boys face DROPS in sadness. So, I ask, what’s your name? What do you need the shoes for?

It turns out he's on a basketball team and is dying for new shoes— so I said prove it… lol I told him if he sends me a picture of him at his game. I'll buy him whatever he wants and his dad breaks down in tears — after he grab the shoes, I said God bless you — YOU ARE VERY WELCOME.

JORDAN, ENJOY YOUR NEW LEBRONS AND keep up the good work! ♥
