One of the reasons I love science

One of the Reasons I Love Science       by Wendy Lynch

I have a very healthy respect for science. Because science holds accountability in it’s way to reaching answers.

I have worked most of my life in marketing within the music industry. I have always had a good and discerning ear for music and had to use that listening along with my creative talents to come up with great sounding commercials for the artists I worked with.

I decided to go back to school in 2017 and enrolled in an academy for recording arts and sciences. It was a very condensed program over nine months that taught you every aspect of the recording industry, I was keen to get behind the mixing boards and large 48 track consoles and learn recording.

When school began, I was in for a big surprise. We were studying science, before we got anywhere near the consoles. We learned about the science of hearing. The mechanics of the sound waves hitting the eardrum , the ear drum itself and all of its parts and how it processes sound . The speed at which sound waves move in feet per second. And all the fundamentals of electricity. The way the brain perceives sound, the directions from which sound travels to our brains. All science.

We learned computer processing power, and sample rates and bit depths and the way they were used in recording. We learned the fundamentals of sound and acoustics .We learned about the historic inventors of sound from radios Marconi to the early engineers of sound. We learned about the magnetics and science of tape.

One thing for sure is I learned what our professors warned, you will never listen to a recording the same way again. I can now hear all the tracks, the background, the panning left or right on a recording and it is with a critical ear that I listen. I love this.
