The One Statement I Hated Hearing...

The One Statement I Hated Hearing...

First, I want to say that I hope you had a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.

If you had to work on the holiday, I would like to say “Thank You” for serving your patients and being there for them.

I can't believe that we're already in the last month of 2022.

The one statement I heard for many years and hated: “It’s all about who you know”.

I didn't want to listen to people when they told me that.

I hated it because I am not an extroverted person.

I am ok with being alone.

I can go to a restaurant and eat by myself.

I can go on a trip by myself.

It takes time for me to warm up to people and be able to share.

I don’t like to go up to people I don’t know and start a conversation.

I’m not the first person to say “Hello”.

Please don’t tell anyone but my nickname in elementary school was “Missy Prissy”. The kids thought I was stuck up, but I was shy and I feared rejection, so I kept to myself and wouldn't put myself out there.

I don't want the spotlight on me and yes, I still fear rejection.

Just this week at my women's networking group, we started our meeting with an "icebreaker" question: pick a woman at your table and, using one word, how would you describe her when you first met?

Some women described their partner as goal-oriented, bubbly, kind, free-spirit, etc.

My partner described me as "quiet".

I used to think that I didn't need anyone else's help.

I thought I could do this on my own.

But I was wrong.

I could keep trying to figure it out by myself but it was going to take a whole lot longer.

If “it’s all about who you know”, I wondered,

  • How do I meet these people?
  • Who are “these people” that I need to know?
  • Why do I need to know “these people”?
  • How will I be able to take the next step if I don’t know the right people?

More time wasted, more frustration, and more disappointment was ahead if I didn't start trying to find "the people".

In the end, I came to realize that “the people” I needed to know were

  • Pharmacists who shared the same passions as me (remember the questions from last the last newsletter article? Those were the questions that I asked to determine if our passions aligned)
  • Entrepreneurs who are just starting out because the struggle is real in the beginning and we’re all dealing with imposter syndrome
  • Entrepreneurs who have been in business for 5, 10, 15, 20+ years (they have the experience and mistakes that I need to learn from)
  • People inside and outside of pharmacy (professors and administrators in pharmacy and business schools; pharmacy students; independent pharmacy owners; hosts of podcasts; the Board of Pharmacy; my legislators)

Connections develop into relationships.

Relationships turn into support.

Who do you need to know?

Where do you need help?

Have you asked for help?

Who can you connect with?

Who have you reached out to?

You are not alone in being scared to reach out to people you don't know. I am right here with you.

It's not a competition.

I want you to win too.

-Melissa

Next week: The 3rd step I took in my journey to be an entrepreneur. It's how I'm working to embrace the “it’s all about who you know.”

"Go Beyond Dispensing"- my course to teach pharmacists how they can use the knowledge they have (beyond the traditional roles)- is now accepting Beta Students (only 2 spots remain).
