OneHealth and Access Bank Partner to Deliver Critical Health Services to Underserved Women in Bariga

Bariga, like many underserved communities in Lagos, is home to women who seem to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. They are mothers, caregivers, and breadwinners who always put their families first, often at the expense of their own well-being.

For many of these women, regular health checkups are a luxury they can’t afford. High blood pressure goes unnoticed, blood sugar levels spiral out of control, and conversations about body weight and nutrition feel unattainable. The result? Treatable conditions grow into life-threatening challenges.

Last week, through a partnership with Access Bank, we stepped into Bariga to deliver critical health services to these women. Together, we brought essential health screenings right to their doorstep. These screenings weren’t just about numbers, they were about starting a conversation, creating awareness, and giving women the tools to take charge of their health.

Here’s what we did:

  • Checked blood pressure to help identify risks of hypertension early.
  • Measured blood sugar levels to flag signs of diabetes.
  • Calculated BMI to discuss weight and overall health risks.
  • Provided one-on-one consultations to guide them toward healthier choices.

The Problem Runs Deep

For women in Bariga, health challenges go hand-in-hand with the daily struggle to make ends meet. Many work tirelessly in informal jobs, with little time or money to visit a hospital. Even when they suspect something might be wrong, the fear of costly tests and treatments keeps them silent.

Some shared stories of dizziness they’d ignored for weeks. Others talked about managing their symptoms with unprescribed medications because it was all they could afford. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s also why initiatives like this matter so much.

For some of these women, it was the first time anyone had taken their blood pressure or explained what their sugar levels meant. A woman who knows she has high blood pressure today can take steps to prevent a stroke tomorrow.

Partnerships for Impact

This outreach is just the beginning. By collaborating with organizations like Access Bank and community-based initiatives, we are building a model of care that bridges the gap between underserved populations and essential health resources. Together, we’re championing preventative healthcare and ensuring that no one is left behind.

We are inspired by the resilience of these women and remain committed to empowering them to take control of their health. Because when women thrive, communities prosper.
