For Ontario's path to net zero, diversification is everything
In many aspects of life, diversity is our strength. It enriches our workplaces, stabilizes our financial portfolios, and fosters innovation. So why should our approach to energy be any different?
A recent study by Guidehouse, commissioned by Enbridge Gas, explored two pathways to net-zero emissions in Ontario – electrification and a more diversified one. While some argue for full electrification as the best path forward, it's important to hedge our bets and not put all our energy eggs in one basket.
The diversified pathway involves a balance of electrification, low- and zero-carbon gas, and carbon capture using gas infrastructure. This approach not only meets the growing energy needs of Ontario homes and businesses through reliable, resilient and affordable energy supply but protects against impacts from extreme events and maintains industry competitiveness and consumer choice – and ultimately affordability.
Natural gas already plays a crucial role in this diverse and balanced energy mix and will continue to as the province transitions to a clean energy future through the integration of low-carbon fuels and new technology.
Currently, as Ontarians are using more and more power with electric vehicles and economic development, as the federal government introduced its emissions reduction plan in March 2022, and pressure mounts over carbon taxes, it's clear that a prudent, diversified approach to energy is needed now more than ever.

Embracing a diversified energy mix is like planting a variety of seeds – it leads to a more resilient, vibrant, and sustainable future. And nurturing this energy garden will ultimately support a greener Ontario, helping us reach our climate action goals while ensuring that energy is available when we need it, at the lowest cost.
Energy providers, regulators and governments are working together towards achieving a net zero path.
