An open letter to pastors

Pastors are understandably hesitant to become involved in politics. At one time national politics generally involved the relative emphasis to be placed on national security versus social programs (guns vs. butter)—and there were sincere, dedicated Christians on both sides of that issue.

Those days are long gone! Today’s politics involve such issues as:

• A movement to overturn the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

• Legal attempts to force Christians to do things they believe will be contrary to God’s will.

• The vigorous promotion of the murder of unborn children.

• Assertions that children belong to the schools (i.e. the state).

• Organized attempts in schools to get children to question their gender.

• Allowing biological males in girls’ sports, restrooms, and locker rooms.

• The “grooming” of children through sexually provocative “trans” dances in libraries, schools, and other venues.

• The attempt to begin legitimizing pedophilia by referring to “Minor Attracted Persons.”

• Providing puberty blockers to children.

• The child sexual mutilation of children in the name of gender affirmation.

This is not politics as usual. This is evil!

Eric Metaxas, the author of an outstanding and very well researched book on Dietrich Bonhoeffer recently Tweeted, “The shameful silence of the American Church on a host of issues precisely parallels the silence of the German church in the 1930s... Will we wake up?”

I fear that many churches have lost their prophetic voice for the sake of getting along with the world (see James 4:4).

Pastors, please talk to your people about these issues and encourage them to be good citizens by voting. Honestly, if the term “politics” keeps us from speaking out against evil…well, “If salt loses its saltiness…It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” (Matthew 5:13).
