OpenAI introduced "Projects" feature for better chat organization in ChatGPT

OpenAI has unveiled a new feature called "Projects" for ChatGPT, designed to enhance user experience by providing improved organization and customization of conversations. Announced on December 13, 2024, as part of OpenAI's "12 Days of OpenAI" event, this feature is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams subscribers, with plans to roll out to Enterprise and Edu users in early 2025.

Key Features of Projects

Projects offers several notable capabilities:

  • Grouping of files and chats for better management of multi-chat work
  • Custom instructions for ChatGPT within specific Project spaces
  • Integration with Canvas and ChatGPT Search functionalities
  • Support for file uploads, allowing context-specific interactions
  • Ability to move existing chats into Projects

How Projects Works

Users can create a new project by clicking the "+" button next to "Project" on the top-right of the ChatGPT interface. Within a Project, ChatGPT remembers specific instructions and relevant data, allowing for more cohesive and context-aware interactions.

Practical Applications

The Projects feature has demonstrated versatility in various scenarios:

  • Facilitating group activities like Secret Santa gift exchanges
  • Managing household maintenance information
  • Web development, integrating design files and coding preferences

Limitations and Future Developments

While Projects represents a significant improvement in ChatGPT's usability, there are some limitations:

  • Projects currently use GPT-4o, and the model cannot be changed
  • There is a limit to the number of files that can be uploaded into a project
  • Connectors for Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive are not yet supported

As OpenAI continues to refine and expand the Projects feature, it signals the company's commitment to making ChatGPT a comprehensive tool for writing, research, programming, and complex task execution.
