OPENING & RELAXING
I remember as a child hiding in the most uncommon places, frozen and immobilized, in fear of being caught in my mother and sister’s rageful conflict and the potential consequences of coming in contact with the rage itself. I would sit quietly for hours, barely breathing. In closets. Behind doors. In clothes hampers. In the far corners of our large wooded backyard. Covering my ears with my cupped hands, clothes from the hamper or singing a song.
When outside, I would listen intently to the breeze in the trees as a means of distracting myself. My nervous system, muscles, fascia, cellular and behavioral responses harbored those hyper-alert instincts for years, much as a soldier would need to recover from the vestiges of war tragedies.
Many decades later, having studied with trauma scientist-practitioners, behavioral experts, neuroscientists and energy masters, I learned that, for the most part, all I needed to do was open and relax. That my body would take care of the rest of the healing if I could somehow release the ingrained hyper-alert trauma responses of constant contraction and let the blood, water, lymph and energy flow through my body parts, and subtle energy flow through my human energy structure.
Ultimately, having accomplished the flow of those material and energetic streams, I would be able to let my consciousness awaken, spirit flow and soul feel nourished.
Yet it took YEARS (decades) of moving through the constrictions of my neuromuscular tightness (with somatic experiencing work/ training, neuromuscular reconditioning, bodywork), energy blockages (with several types of Energy work/ training), behavioral reconditioning (decades of therapy, biofeedback and neural reprogramming) and heart opening (spiritual and human development shadow work) before I could begin to understand how to open and relax enough to get out of my way of the cosmic intelligence always available to me.
As humans, we are innately First Responders.
We are wired to respond to the symptoms of danger in our environment BEFORE we feel safe enough to relax into the pleasurable experiences, no matter the ratio of each.
And this normal experience of tensing into constrictions as a means of being “ready to respond” actually slow down our body’s immune response and healing capacities. So it’s a double whammy. Not only are we closing off our body’s natural ability to promote healing and resolving our inner crises, but we also close off the organic intelligence that guides us to make better choices, be inspired and promote flow and creativity.
Stress, worry and constriction reduce the body’s ability to heal, and also limit our access to the so-called “superhuman” capacities of intuition and transpersonal “psychic” capacities that help us reach a higher potential.
Being open, relaxed, happy and full of faith help us heal more quickly and access these organic cosmic intelligences that would keep us aligned.
So while our cultural training suggests that “relaxation” should only come after a long day of effort or work, the effort that’s required to live a “productive” life is akin to a long slow simmer of constriction and stress.
What if we could indeed learn to be in the world from an open and relaxed state? Could we choose to live differently, allowing ourselves to have open hearts, open minds and open channels to receive whatever is always already available to us?
How to Open and Relax
1. Schedule a daily relaxation appointment with yourself to recharge, rebalance and sustain your energy levels
Relaxing opens up the energy channels in your body so more energy flows through them. It’s an instant recharge if you know how to relax well. Relaxing daily balances you naturally and effortlessly and over time you can sustain your energy levels to become remarkably consistent. This is valuable for anyone, but especially if you are an empathic being, pushing the edge of your existence, or live at the edge of your capacity.
2. Open and connect the channels of your mind, heart and will by opening and relaxing.
You are of course an amalgam of mind-body-spirit-soul even if you don’t feel the connection. Having a closed mind or heart will affect your spiritual or soulful development, and vice-versa, which will also affect your visionary capacities and your energy.
Many exercises exist to bring openness to the heart or heart chakra, yet seldom imagine the heart as a conduit between the mind (the upper chakras, as a connector to spirit) and the will (the dantien, or sacral chakra).

3yIt is always good to get a professional perspective on the connection between our mind and heart and how they affect our spiritual development and our ability to handle all situations in our life, and how to react to them!! The article makes so much sense!! My belief is that by being honest with ourselves and accepting truth in our lives, we can obtain that connection between our mind and heart, and find so much peace in our lives and the decisions we make along the way!! And for me sitting in solitude blocking all outside noises was the way I accomplished that. The article has only reaffirmed my believe that I have been gifted with "Blessed Hope"!! Great article!! Informative and insightful!! Thanks for sharing Holly!!
