OPIOID OVERDOSE DEATHS DOUBLE to nearly 600: ‘I don’t see any stop’
These numbers are staggering! The lives that are being lost are someones child, sister, brother, mother, father, husband and wife. The number of families being affected by this epidemic is simply heartbreaking. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show opioid overdoses have more than quadrupled nationwide since 1999.
Palm Beach Post wrote: Every 15 hours last year, someone died of an opioid overdose in Palm Beach County, nearly double the rate of murders and fatal car crashes.The 590 opioid overdose deaths in 2016, an all-time high for the county, are nearly twice as many as the year before, according to a Palm Beach Post analysis of records from the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“That’s just a phenomenal number,” said Dr. Michael Bell, the medical examiner. “I don’t see any stop.”
The number dying with fentanyl in their system rose to 310 from 91 the year before...

7yWe need to find out what is working, otherwise we will continue to chase an elusive foe. Is it treatment, peer to peer recovery support, mental health counseling or law enforcement. For several years now I have seen graph after graph and the death toll continues to rise. We are a smart county with smart people, their has to be a solution. If something does not happen, a whole generation is in jeopardy.

7ySuch a devastating and complex problem. Focusing on the drugs has not produced effective results. Perhaps our efforts would be better directed at addressing the broken family unit and personal wounds.
