Turning Setbacks into New Beginnings: A Client's Journey to Landing a Dream Role

Losing a job is never easy, especially when you’ve been a senior leader at a global institution. Recently, a client of mine found himself navigating this difficult situation. He had been a Managing Director at a top global bank, only to lose his role due to a large restructuring program following the merger of banking giants. Despite understanding the business rationale, the loss still stung, and the challenge of overcoming negative emotions was real.

He quickly engaged with his network and was fortunate enough to receive a job offer soon after. However, he wasn’t entirely convinced it was the right fit. That’s when we began our work together. The first step was to pause and take a deeper look at who he was and what he truly wanted—not just in his career, but in life as a whole. We explored his values, strengths, preferences, and aspirations to paint a clear picture of his ideal future, and what his next role should look like.

During this process, we addressed the lingering negativity from his job loss to ensure he was in the best possible shape for interviews. We revamped his CV and LinkedIn profile to better reflect his unique strengths, rather than simply what he thought employers were looking for. We also practiced his messaging and interview pitch, rebuilding his confidence along the way, and ensuring he had the right mindset and approach.

Before long, the results spoke for themselves. He not only had the initial offer on the table but also sparked interest from two other leading banks. As tempting as it was to accept the first offer, we strategized together on how to keep that offer warm while continuing to pursue the other opportunities. His focus remained on the central question: "What do I really want?" This guided him in evaluating each role and tweaking his approach to better reflect his authentic strengths.

Our collaboration started in June, and October 1st, he stepped into his new role leading an exciting function in his "dream" bank. The team is right. The location too. And he is right for the role. His own personal strengths match perfectly with their requirements. It was a role he hadn’t even dared to believe was within reach when we first started. Yet, with a positive mindset, a renewed sense of purpose and a clear understanding of his goals, he secured a position that was not only a career advancement but also a personal triumph. He landed a much better job than his previous role.
