Opportunity for Research Funding on Just Food Systems Transitions
How can Africa’s food systems transform to ensure sustainability, equity, and resilience while creating green jobs for youth?
The INCLUDE Knowledge Platform is proud to announce its latest research programme: Green Jobs for Youth in a Just Food Systems Transition in Africa.
Africa’s food systems face immense challenges from climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and political instability. These crises disproportionately affect youth, who endure the impacts of inequalities and climate change but are also key drivers of transformation.
This programme seeks to address these critical challenges through country-specific case studies. The research will explore the political economy dynamics and inclusive development implications of a just food systems transition, with a particular focus on youth employment.
Key Research Questions:
Meaningful stakeholder engagement, particularly involving youth and young women, is essential to the research process, fostering inclusive, equitable, and sustainable transitions in Africa’s food systems. Applications are welcome from both individuals and organizations. The lead researcher has to be African or of African descent (meaning they are born in Africa and have lived experiences on the continent).

Please note that the deadline for proposals is 6 January 2024.
Foundation Paper:
This foundation paper synthesizes existing research on Africa's food systems transition, focusing on the opportunities and barriers for youth. It lays the groundwork for an analytical framework and key research questions that will guide upcoming case studies. Strong applications should demonstrate a solid understanding of and engagement with the insights presented in the foundation paper.
