Oracle AWS Partnership: Database Powerhouse Meets Cloud Giant

Oracle and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced a new partnership called Oracle Database@AWS. This partnership will allow customers to use Oracle's database services directly on AWS's cloud platform.

Customers can now seamlessly access Oracle Autonomous Database and Oracle Exadata Database Service on AWS, streamlining the migration and deployment of enterprise workloads to the cloud. This integration enhances agility, flexibility, and security, empowering businesses to innovate faster and scale efficiently across their cloud infrastructure. With the combined power of Oracle and AWS, organizations can optimize performance while simplifying operations, ensuring a smooth transition to a more dynamic and secure cloud environment.

Here are the main takeaways:

What it does: Customers can now use Oracle's advanced database services (like Oracle Autonomous Database and Exadata Database Service) within AWS's cloud environment.

Benefits for Customers

  • Customers can keep their Oracle databases while using AWS's popular cloud services.
  • It's easier to move existing databases to the cloud.
  • Zero-ETL integration between Oracle Database services and AWS Analytics allows customers to effortlessly and securely connect their Oracle databases with AWS-based applications, enabling real-time data analysis. This eliminates the need to create complex data pipelines, providing faster, more in-depth insights with minimal effort. Businesses can now tap into their existing Oracle and AWS resources to drive data-driven decisions faster and more efficiently.
  • Flexible solutions make it easier and faster to move Oracle databases to the cloud, with support for trusted migration tools like Oracle Zero Downtime Migration, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition.
  • Oracle Database@AWS gives customers a unified experience across Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and AWS, making database management, billing, and customer support easier.
  • Customers benefit from a fully unified support experience from both AWS and Oracle, with expert guidance through reference architectures, landing zones, and additional resources to help them confidently build and run their most critical enterprise applications in the cloud.
  • Users can effortlessly connect their Oracle Database to applications running on Amazon EC2, AWS Analytics, and even tap into advanced AI and machine learning tools like Amazon Bedrock.
  • This seamless integration helps businesses streamline their operations and fully leverage both Oracle and AWS technologies for improved performance and innovation.
  • There's less delay (lower latency) between Oracle databases and AWS applications.

Availability

It will be available for preview later in 2024, with broader availability in 2025.

Other features

  • A streamlined procurement process through AWS Marketplace allows customers to purchase Oracle Database services using their current AWS commitments. They can also leverage their existing Oracle license benefits, including Bring Your Own License (BYOL) and discount programs like Oracle Support Rewards (OSR), making it easier and more cost-effective to access Oracle's cloud offerings.
  • Simplified billing and support from both Oracle and AWS.
  • Effortless integration with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) enables secure, streamlined database backups, restorations, and disaster recovery, ensuring data protection and business continuity.

Oracle Chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison, reported a significant increase in demand from customers seeking to use multiple clouds. "To meet this demand and give customers the choice and flexibility they want, Amazon and Oracle are seamlessly connecting AWS services with the very latest Oracle Database technology, including the Oracle Autonomous Database. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure deployed inside of AWS datacenters, we can provide customers with the best possible database and network performance.”

Industry reaction

Several big companies (like Best Buy, Fidelity Investments, State Street, and Vodafone) have expressed excitement about this partnership, seeing it as a way to improve their services and modernize their IT systems.

This partnership is significant because Oracle and AWS are major players in the tech industry, and their collaboration could make it easier for many businesses to manage their data and enterprise cloud solutions more efficiently.

If you're looking to simplify your cloud infrastructure with the benefits of Oracle Database@AWS, we can help you navigate the integration and get started with ease.

Oracle has also partnered with Google to launch Oracle Database@Google Cloud, now generally available. Initially announced on June 11, the service is currently accessible in four Google Cloud regions: two in the U.S., and one each in London and Frankfurt. Expansion plans are already underway, with the service expected to roll out to more regions across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America in the coming months.
