"I’ve been talking to quite a few organisations who are currently reviewing their performance management approach. Whilst I don’t love them, I do recognise that many organisations need them. The problem though, is that we get too caught up on them. Especially when they’re connected to reward. Although they seem to provide a ‘carrot’, they’re not an effective motivator. Review your rating scale if needed – but don’t make it your first priority! What really matters is clarity of expectations and regular, quality conversations. Start there!"
